Learn the basics of the NYU course registration process with this short animated overview. We cover the types of classes you can take, how to search and register for classes, putting yourself on a waitlist, swap, edit swap, and more.

Get Ready: Prepare for Registration

About a month before registration, you’ll receive an email that the schedule of classes is available to view in Albert.  At that time, and before registration opens, follow the steps below to make sure the classes you want to take are available to you.

General registration dates are listed on the NYU academic calendar. About a month before registration, you’ll receive an email that the schedule of classes is available to view in Albert. At that time, you will be able to check your exact registration day and time by visiting the Enrollment Dates section on the home page of Albert. Appointments are prioritized by earned credit amount (excluding credits in progress).

Please Note: New first-year students and external transfers usually register over the summer for the fall term, and in November for the spring term. Continuing students register in April for the fall term, and in November for the spring term.

Go to Albert to see what you need to do to resolve any holds. Some holds - like the Advisor Clearance hold, Missing Credentials hold, or a past due balance - may block you from registration. Click "Details" in the "Holds" section to see contact and resolution information.

Review your degree progress and expected graduation term, and discuss any registration holds with your advisor to make sure you are meeting all degree requirements prior to registration.

To register for classes, you are required to have a cell phone number for NYU emergency alerts and provide an emergency contact. Go to Albert and update your information under Personal Info.

Once the schedule of classes is available to view in Albert for the upcoming term, browse available classes using course search, and add them to your Shopping Cart in Albert. You may also utilize the new beta public course search to view available classes.

Add classes you’re interested in taking to your Shopping Cart in Albert to save them for when your registration day and time arrives. Then, validate your classes to confirm your enrollment eligibility for those selections. This is important because it allows you to check for time conflicts, missing requisites (such as course prerequisites, corequisites, or advanced standing courses),  departmental or instructor consent, or other program restrictions.

Register for Classes

Once registration is open, enroll in your classes by adding them to your schedule in Albert.

When you’re ready to register, review these step-by-step instructions on how to enroll in the classes that are in your Shopping Cart.

If a class is full, you can join a waitlist if available in Albert. If a seat opens, the first person on the waitlist is automatically enrolled. Being on a waitlist does not guarantee enrollment. Some classes do not offer a waitlist option, and the waitlist can fill up quickly.

After you have enrolled in classes for the upcoming term, make sure to check your financial aid and bursar accounts before the start of classes. For more information, contact the Office of Financial Aid

Registering After De-Enrollment

If you've been de-enrolled from your classes and need to re-register, follow these steps.

Missing Credentials

Consistent with University policy, you may be de-enrolled because you did not submit proof of your education completion. These official documents are a requirement for enrollment at NYU. Once the registration hold is removed, you will be permitted to re-register for classes until the Drop/Add Deadline, which can be found on the Academic Calendar.

Non-payment

If you have been de-enrolled from your classes as a result of non-payment, follow the steps below to re-register. These steps apply to spring, summer, fall and January terms.

1. Contact the Bursar's Office immediately

2. Verify your enrollment eligibility on Albert.

  • Go to the Student Center in Albert to check your eligibility to enroll for this term's classes. Review the Holds area of your Student Center or select the Check Registration Status functionality to determine if you have been cleared by the Bursar's Office to once again enroll for classes.

3. Enroll in classes on Albert.

  • Once you are eligible, use the Enroll feature in Albert to register for your classes. You may find that the selection of available classes is limited. Contact your academic advisor or the advising office of your college for assistance in planning an alternative schedule.
