Eligibility
For first-year applicants, eligibility for scholarships and grants varies depending on a few factors, including where you live, and what school you are applying for.
NYU Scholarships and Grants
For traditional first-year undergraduate students in New York, the NYU Promise means that NYU will meet your full demonstrated financial need, without the expectation to take out loans.
Students applying to NYU Shanghai or NYU Abu Dhabi should visit the websites of those campuses to obtain further details on financial aid.
Federal Grant Programs
If eligible, these federal grants usually do not require repayment.
State Scholarships and Grant Programs
The following programs are for New York state residents only. If you are not a New York state resident, you should contact your state financial aid agency to ask about programs for which you may qualify. You can find contact information by calling 1-800-433-3243.
Scholar Programs
Admitted students who are eligible for institutional scholarship funding may also be offered the opportunity to participate in one of the following scholar programs at the time of admission.
Eligibility
Transfer students admitted to NYU are not eligible for NYU scholarships and grants, including the NYU Promise. However, transfer students are eligible to apply for federal aid (including the federal and state programs below), external (non-NYU) scholarships, and private loans.

All applicants, regardless of citizenship status, may apply for external (non-NYU) scholarships. Please note, students admitted to DAUS are not eligible for the NYU Promise (which is only available to first-time, full-time students).

As a graduate student at NYU, any scholarship or grant aid will come primarily from the school you’re attending. You should check with your program or school directly about deadlines for university scholarship consideration and other financial aid specific to the program to which you are applying. Graduate students may also wish to explore the following federal grants, veteran and military programs, and outside scholarships.
Federal Grant Programs
These federal grants usually do not require repayment.
Veteran and Military Programs
Veterans and military students should be sure to visit the NYU veterans and general veterans benefits pages for more information.
Scholarships and Grants from Other Organizations
You may be eligible for a private scholarship or grant from an outside organization or agency. Some sources to explore include employers, unions, professional organizations, and community and special interest groups.
You may also take advantage of National Scholarship Competitions. These require a New York University endorsement.
Please note: Scholarships are considered a financial aid resource and must be added to your financial aid package based on federal regulations prohibiting students from receiving more financial aid than their cost of attendance. If you have more aid than your cost of attendance, your loans or work-study may be reduced. NYU scholarships would only be reduced if absolutely necessary. We want you to have as much free money as possible. We will apply any outside scholarships to your bill before applying other forms of aid.
