Attire Accessories
Custom-made Academic Attire
Master’s and doctoral candidates or graduates may prefer to purchase custom-made academic attire. In particular, those entering the profession of academia may prefer the fine quality regalia suitable for wearing regularly in academic ceremonies. Master’s and doctoral candidates or graduates who wish to purchase custom-made academic attire can do so at the Herff Jones academic regalia website.
Class Rings
Order your class ring at the NYU Bookstore. Meet a Herff Jones representative to try on ring sizes, see samples, and place your order. Representatives will be at the bookstore from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. on the following dates: March 10, 11, and 31, and April 1. Class rings can also be ordered online.
University Honors Scholars
If you reach graduation as a top-ranking Baccalaureate candidate or graduate, you will be named a University Honors Scholar and awarded the NYU Founders Day Award. Recipients of this honor receive a gold tassel to wear during Commencement and a personalized certificate.
Please note that the University does not distribute tassels, cords, or stoles for Latin honors. Some schools might distribute cords for certain internal honors. Please reach out to your school with questions about departmental honors.
Hood Colors
Much of the color and meaning of the attire is found in the master’s and doctoral hoods. These are lined with satin in the color(s) of the institution conferring the degree and have a velvet border in the color signifying the degree of learning. See the History, Regalia, and Program page for the list of degrees associated with each color.
