NYU NetID, Password, and Start Page

Your NYU NetID and password, used along with NYU Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) and Duo, is how you access the majority of NYU's online services, including your email, Google apps, NYU Wi-Fi, and more. Getting them set up for the first time is simple, and so is maintaining them throughout your time at NYU.

NYU NetID

All NYU faculty and staff members, as well as students enrolled in degree or diploma programs, are provided with an NYU NetID. Your NetID is a combination of your initials and a few random numbers, e.g., aqe123, and is usually printed on the back of your NYUCard. Once activated, your NetID is used to create your default NYU Email address and username for logging in to NYU online services (e.g., abc123@nyu.edu).

Activating Your NetID

Before you can use your NYU NetID to log into services, you will need to activate it. During this process, you'll also be asked to create your NYU password.

  1. Go to the NYU Start page.
  2. Click the New to NYU? Start Here: Activate your NetID button.
  3. Enter your University ID (e.g., N12345678) and Date of Birth (format: mm/dd/yyyy).
  4. Complete the CAPTCHA test and click Continue.
  5. Complete the acknowledgment of University Policies and Terms of Use, then click Continue.
  6. After reading Next Steps, click Continue.
  7. Go to Set Password and click Set Password. (You can also use the secure password generator to set your password. If you need to see what you have typed, click the eye icon).
  8. Once congratulated for setting a password, click Continue.

After You've Activated

Once your NetID is active, there are a few other things you should do to ensure that your account is well protected and you're able to use NYU services.

Your “recovery email” is the email NYU will contact if you ever need to reset your NYU NetID password or otherwise do not have access to your NYU Email. If you are a new student, this is likely the email you used when you applied to NYU. Your recovery email should be an account you will always have access to, such as a personal Gmail account.

To set or update your recovery email:

  1. Go to start.nyu.edu and select Login. You will be prompted to enter your NetID and password. If you are enrolled in NYU MFA, you may be asked to complete MFA authentication.
    1. If you forgot your NYU NetID password and no longer have access to your current recovery email, please get in touch with the NYU IT Service Desk for assistance.
  2. Once logged in, click Security Settings.
  3. In the Password Recovery Email Address field, enter the NON-NYU email address you wish to use as your new recovery email, then enter it again to confirm. When complete, select Continue.
  4. On the Confirm Your Settings page, click Confirm. Depending on the options chosen, you will be sent to a page that says "You’re Done!" or "You’re Almost Done!" Regardless of the confirmation page message, the update of your recovery email is complete.

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is a method of protecting your NYU credentials by requiring a second layer of authentication beyond your NYU password, usually by confirming your identity using the Duo app, which you install on your phone. Just about every online NYU service requires MFA, so it's a good idea to set it up and test it before you need it.

Top Support Questions

These are the most frequently asked questions about NYU NetIDs.

If you're not able to log into an NYU service, here are a few things to check:

  • Make sure you've activated your NetID (see above)
  • Make sure you're using your NetID plus @nyu.edu as your username (abc123@nyu.edu)
  • Make sure you're using your NetID@nyu.edu and not your University Number (N#########)
  • Make sure you're using your NYU NetID and not a SternID or other similar identifier.
  • Make sure you're typing in your password correctly; typos in the password field are the single most common cause of login issues.

If you still are unable locate your NetID, contact the IT Service Desk for assistance.

If you have your NYUCard, your NetID (along with your University "N" Number) is printed on the back.

To find your NetID online, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the NYU Start page.
  2. Click on the Find NetID card.
  3. Enter your University ID (e.g., N12345678) and Date of Birth (format: mm/dd/yyyy).
  4. Complete the CAPTCHA test and click Search.

If you still are unable to locate your NetID, contact the IT Service Desk for assistance.

Except under extraordinary circumstances, your NetID cannot be changed. For more information on this policy and possible exceptions, see Rules on changes to your NetID in the NYU Support Center knowledge base.

If you don't want to use your NetID as your default NYU email address, you can select a personal email address within the Preferences section of NYUHome.

Certain members of the NYU community are eligible to sponsor a visiting affiliate for a NetID and password.

If your visitor only needs access to NYU Wi-Fi, consider requesting Guest Wi-Fi access for them instead of a full Affiliate NetID.

No. Stern IDs are used to access specific NYU Stern resources and cannot be used in place of an NYU NetID.

NYU Password

The password associated with your NYU NetID is, along with NYU Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) and Duo, the key to online services such as NYU Home, NYU Email, Zoom, Wi-Fi, and more.

Your initial NYU password is set when you activate your NYU NetID (see above). To maintain NYU cybersecurity, you're required to periodically select a new password.

  • Passwords must be at least 14 characters long and must contain at least 3 of these 4 elements:
    • Uppercase letters (A-Z)
    • Lowercase letters (a-z)
    • At least one number (0-9)
    • At least one of these special characters: *!@#^&_–=[]|;~,./? (No other special characters are allowed)
  • Passwords must be changed at least once a year for individual NetID accounts.
  • You cannot reuse a password you used previously.

Want help coming up with a secure password?
Use the Secure Password Generator tool on the NYU Start Page. This will randomly generate acceptable passwords for you to choose from. The password strength bar will let you know if the password you chose is very weak, weak, good, or strong.

  5. Confirm your self-service password recovery.

Your old password may still be stored in a number of places, including your NYU Wi-Fi login and a password manager. You will need to manually update these and other similar services with your new password.

If you have forgotten your password or your password expired, there are self-service options to recover it or create a new one.

  1. Go to the NYU Start Page.
  2. Select the Can't Log In? Click Here card.
  3. Enter your NYU NetID, select the checkbox next to “I’m not a robot,” complete the CAPTCHA test, then select Search
  4. You will be presented with one or both of the following self-service options:
    • Recovery Email - Select Continue to have a security code sent to the recovery email address listed at the top of the screen. Check your recovery email account to get the security code and then return to the NYU Start Page, paste the security code, then select Check Code.
    • Mobile App - This option can only be used to reset your password after you've set it up on the NYU Start Page.
      • To set up: Log in to the NYU Start Page, select Mobile App Setup and follow on-screen instructions.
      • After setup: Open your MFA app and select the Third Party tab with your NetID to generate a passcode. Enter the passcode in the NYU Start Page and select Check Code.
  5. On the “Security Code Is Verified” screen, select Continue, then follow the instructions on the next screen to set a new password.
  6. If you're unable to reset your password using one of the options above, call the IT Service Desk for assistance.

For security reasons, NYU requires that you change your NetID password at least once each year. NYU IT will send multiple notices before your password expires.

If you do not change your password in time, you will not lose any data stored on NYU systems, but you will not be able to access that data or any NetID password-protected services until you change your password.

If you are directed to any link other than the NYU Start Page (start.nyu.edu), do not follow the link. Use PhishAlarm to report the message as potential phishing.

NYU Passwords & Cybersecurity

If you suspect your password has been leaked or stolen, change it immediately and then contact security@nyu.edu for additional assistance.

The good news is that, with the additional protection of Multi-Factor Authentication, even if a cybercriminal obtains your password, they shouldn't be able to log into your account.

Keep an eye on your account for any suspicious activity.

NO ONE at NYU will ask you to tell them your password. Not NYU IT, not the Service Desk, not the Registrar—no one! If someone asks you to tell them your password, you're almost certainly being targeted by a cyberattack, no matter how convincing they may sound.

NEVER give your password to someone else.

If the request comes via email, report it using PhishAlarm. If it's via text message, DM, or phone call, do not engage. End the conversation and contact security@nyu.edu. You may not be the only one getting such a request, and reporting it will help NYU protect the entire community.

NYU Start Page

The NYU Start Page is a service portal that lets you manage many aspects of your NYU identity and access. It's where you'll start when you need to activate your new NYU NetID, and it's where you'll go to manage a number of identity-related tasks throughout your time at NYU, including:

  • setting and changing your password
  • setting up your NYU Multi-Factor Authentication devices
  • creating a personalized email address and preferred name
  • maintaining a non-NYU recovery email address in case you need to reset a forgotten password.
