LGBTQ+ Travel Guidance and Resources

When traveling abroad, depending on the country and culture, LGBTQ+ travelers can face unique challenges. Experiences for LGBTQ+ travelers can vary globally, so it is important to have an understanding of where you are traveling, so you can have an enjoyable and safe trip.

Research Your Destination

You should research not only the social norms of the place you are visiting but also the local laws. In some countries, identifying as LGBTQ+ is illegal. In these locations, LGBTQ+ individuals can be barred from entering the country entirely or subject to detention or legal action if suspected of engaging in or promoting homosexual activity. Other countries have decriminalized homosexuality, but their governments have yet to implement any protections against discrimination.

General Safety

In general, staying aware of your surroundings, being mindful of the culture, trying not to stand out as a tourist, and disclosing as little personal information as possible is the best action for anyone traveling in a new place. Additionally, in some places, homosexuality is perfectly legal and acceptable, but people may still maintain a low profile even in gay-friendly venues due to cultural stigmas. Those societies may require LGBTQ+ travelers to use discretion and avoid discussing their identity.

Considerations For Transgender and Non-Binary Travelers

Transgender and non-binary individuals face unique challenges when traveling particularly when departing from and arriving at airports and when entering a country if their identification documents do not match their current presentation. You can consider speaking to a medical professional or therapist about obtaining a letter that provides explanation for prescriptions associated with one's gender transition (translated into the local language, if necessary), or preparing a short, direct statement to provide to border officials and law enforcement officers, if asked. Harassment from locals can also be a concern, depending on the destination. When traveling, it’s important to keep a low profile. Again, disclosing your identity is a very personal decision and may not always be safe.
