Student Roundtable Discussions

Welcome to Chocolate City
The District of Columbia became the first majority Black major city in the United States in 1957. Over time, as the Black population grew, it subsequently became known as the nation’s “Chocolate City,” a name conferred by a popular funk song shortly after the passage of the District of Columbia’s Home Rule Act in 1973 and proudly embraced by Washingtonians. While the city’s Black population today is now less than 45% partly as a result of economic policies and gentrification, the history and legacy of DC’s central Black culture, power, and identity remain significant forces. These sessions provide a contextual historical illustration of Washington, DC and the roots of Chocolate City today that continue to bolster the Black power movement today.

Salon Series: Conversations with Writers & Artists
The NYU Washington, DC Salon Series: Conversations with Writers & Artists presents an opportunity for the NYU and Washington, DC community to meet and engage in dialogue with acclaimed writers and artists as they reflect on their craft. This program provides facilitated conversations that aim to illuminate the guests’ creative processes, discuss their current works, and explain the impact of their work on the world around us. The Salon Series is made possible by NYU Washington, DC through the collaboration of NYU schools, departments and centers, as well as through special relationships with selected external organizations.

Global Dialogues Series
The Global Dialogues Series convenes some of the world’s foremost scholars, policy makers, practitioners, business leaders, public intellectuals and artists whose ideas and work have made a significant cultural or intellectual contribution to global society as well as to their local community, city and countries. They will gather virtually and at our global sites to confront some of the most intractable issues of contemporary society through the creative interplay of ideas and perspectives.

Stonewall 50
In the early hours of June 28, 1969, only blocks from NYU’s Washington Square campus, the Stonewall riots began, helping to launch the modern LGBTQ+ movement. Fifty years later, join us as we celebrate and commemorate the remarkable social, cultural, medical, and legal transformations that followedStonewall and continue to shape our community and our University.

Weissberg Forum for Discourse in the Public Square
Through the generosity of Trustee Nina Weissberg, New York University has established the Weissberg Forum for Discourse in the Public Square at its Constance Milstein and Family Global Academic Center in Washington, D.C. The Center provides study away and internship experiences for NYU students, as well as rich academic and co-curricular programming. The Weissberg Forum is an annual signature event that brings together distinguished figures from government, industry, the professions, and the academy to discuss complex and timely issues from a variety of perspectives. The Forum, frames and conducts dialogues around issues that provoke differing views and even controversy. The aim is to provide a forum for such issues to be debated in an informed, rigorous, and civil manner -- , the kind of dialogue that academic institutions are intended to promote.

Iconoclash
The latest waves of terrorism, from attacks on the offices of Charlie Hebdo in Paris to the damaging of antiquities in the Middle East, have highlighted both an ideological conflict and the central role of imagery. Terrorists have orchestrated their acts of destruction to stage their beliefs of justice, truth and will for political order. Their propaganda attracts followers from all over the world and subjugates and abuses human beings over wide territories. Their image war contests what we hold to be universal values such as the freedom of artistic expression and the integrity of cultural heritage.
These ongoing forms of destruction and terror demand a review of truth and falsity of values in both a reflective and self-reflective mode. The Washington branch of EUNIC and NYU's John Brademas Center approached this disturbing confrontation through this series.
