NYU Sydney students attend Mardi Gras

Sydney has been at the heart of Australia’s LGBT rights movement since the 1970s.

Our city  is home to the Sydney Mardi Gras, the city’s major annual LGBT Pride Festival and Parade, held during February and March, now known as one of Australia’s most famous and well-loved cultural events and one of Sydney’s biggest tourist drawcards. The parade takes place along Oxford Street, colloquially known as the goldern mile, long home to the city’s most famous gay venues. Newtown’s King Street has also risen in its reputation as a heartland for the city’s LGBT community.

Same-sex marriage has been legal in Australia since 2017 with the majority of Australians actively declaring their support as part of the extensive Marriage Law Postal Survey run by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
