Faculty/Teaching/Instruction
Sessional Lecturer in Film and Media Studies
NYU Sydney is seeking a lecturer to teach the course 'Expressive Culture: Film' to undergraduate students during the NYU semester from August - November 2023.
This course is a central part of New York University’s College Core Curriculum. Art arouses pleasure, wonder, confusion, curiosity, and many other things. How is art made, and for what purpose? How do artworks convey meaning or feelings? How does social context shape the making of art? In Expressive Culture, students explore the complexities of artistic expression by focusing on one of five media: sounds, images, words, performance, or film. Throughout this course, students will develop their understanding of the basic methods and concepts of cinema studies. In particular, students will develop a critical vocabulary for analysing how filmmakers have approached the use of memory, testimony, re-enactment, researched detail, allegory and archives across a diverse range of examples. For more information on the NYU College Core Curriculum and Expressive Culture, please see the NYU College Core Curriculum website.
Responsibilities of the instructor include preparing and leading the weekly class sessions, course coordination, writing assignments, and grading. Lecturers are paid at competitive casual academic rates aligned with local enterprise agreements. In addition to their teaching duties, they will be paid to attend periodic meetings and training, including an induction meeting during the orientation week prior to the start of the semester.
Classes take place at the University of Sydney's Camperdown/Darlington Campus.
