Replace Lost Immigration Documents

Stolen or Lost Passport

If your passport is lost or stolen, report the loss to the local police and get a copy of the police report. To replace your passport, contact your country’s consulate.

If your passport is lost or stolen outside the US, you must apply for a new F-1 or J-1 visa at the nearest US consulate after you get your replacement passport.

If your passport is lost or stolen inside the US, you must get a new F-1 or J-1 visa the next time you travel internationally in order to return to the US as an F-1 or J-1 student. Remember, you can remain in the US without an F-1 or J-1 visa as long as your passport, I-20 or DS-2019, and I-94 are valid.

Lost, Damaged, or Stolen I-20 or DS-2019

The OGS can issue a replacement document for you. You will receive your new I-20 or DS-2019 within a week of requesting the replacement. If you want your I-20 or DS-2019 replacement right away, come to our advising hours with your passport and I-94 record.

Steps to request a replacement I-20 or DS-2019

For F-1 Students

STEP 1

Get scans of your documents.

In order to request a new I-20, you will need a scan of

your passport photo page,
your EAD card if you are currently on post-completion OPT or STEM OPT.

If any or all of the above documents were lost or stolen along with your I-20, please contact us.

STEP 2

Complete and submit your F-1 request to replace your lost document.

OGS will then generate a new I-20. We take up to 5 business days to complete your request.

For J-1 Students

STEP 1

Get a scan of your passport photo page.

If your passport was lost or stolen along with your DS-2019, please contact us.

STEP 2

Complete and submit your J-1 request to replace your lost document.

OGS will then generate a new DS-2019. We take up to 5 business days to complete your request. Please note that we are not permitted to send a scan or other electronic copy of your DS-2019. When you complete the request to replace your lost document, you specify how you prefer to receive your new DS-2019.
