Unlike a university whose campus is separated by gates or walls, NYU is very much in and of New York City and our residence halls are just another part of a busy metropolis with which we share the streets, sidewalks, parks, and trains. It's nearly impossible to tell where the city begins and the University ends! While studying and living in New York City is a unique and exciting experience, it does present some challenges on move-in day. Please refer to the information here to help prepare for your arrival.
Students may not move in prior to Sunday, August 25, 2019.
Upon arrival in the Fall semester, students will check-in at their specific residence hall's Resource Center. Our staff will be available to greet students and provide important check-in materials including your keys and other things you need to get settled.
New upperclassmen may check-in to their residence halls between the hours of 8:00AM-5:00PM beginning on Sunday, August 25, 2019.
New graduate students may check-in to their residence halls between the hours of 8:00AM-5:00PM on Sunday, August 25, 2019. (Note: Students assigned to Stuyvesant Town will receive detailed check-in information via email regarding their specific check-in date.)
Returning undergraduates may check-in to their residence halls between the hours of 8:00AM -9:00PM on Sunday, August 25, 2019.
- Students with short term/temporary assignments at the Stewart Hotel cannot check-in until 3:00pm on Sunday, September 1, 2019.
- It is suggested that residents of Gramercy Green checking in on Sunday the 25th arrive during the following schedule:
Floors 2 - 6, 17 - PH: 8:00am - 12:00pm
Floors 7 - 11: 12:00pm - 4:00pm
Floors 12 - 16: 4:00pm - 8:00pm

Floors 4 - 6: 8:00am - 11:00am
Floors 7 - 9: 11:00am - 2:00pm

While studying and living in New York City is a unique and exciting experience, it does present several significant challenges, especially on move-in day. You should be sure to:
Plan to arrive during your reserved check-in time according to your building and floor assignment.
Check the weather and traffic forecasts for lower Manhattan, and plan accordingly. New York City parking rules are complicated and are not suspended during check-in.
Dress comfortably. You will be on your feet for most of the day, doing a lot of walking, and waiting in long lines.
Prepare for a long day. It may be hot and humid, or cool and raining. Either way it is likely that hundreds of residents and family members will be waiting in long lines to check-in and to use the elevators. Patience and a sense of humor will be invaluable assets to carry with you throughout the day.
Predetermine what is really necessary to bring on check-in day. Seasonal items that are not needed for the first few weeks of the school year could be brought in sometime after check-in day when there are no lines for the elevators. You can also ship these items to your building so they arrive after you check-in. Please note that packages delivered before you arrive cannot be accepted and will be returned to sender.
NYU Public Safety Officers and University volunteers will be directing traffic and directing you to check-in.
STOP, DROP, PARK: An NYU Public Safety Officer will direct your vehicle into a "TEMPORARY" unloading zone. As soon as a vehicle is unloaded it must be moved out of the unloading area. There are parking garages located near all residence halls.
Typically the incoming resident goes to the check-in table to sign for her/his keys and to pick up a "Welcome" packet while family and/or friends begin to unload personal belongings.
Tip 1: Never leave personal belongings unattended, whether it is on the sidewalk, in an unlocked car, or in a lobby. The University does not accept responsibility for lost, damaged, or stolen items.
Tip 2: Be sure to comply with posted parking regulations. NYU is not responsible for parking tickets issued by the New York City police or traffic agents.
A) Proceed to the designated “check-in" table, with a photo ID readily available.
B) Complete all registration forms and receive your room keys.
C) Proceed to your room.
It may only take 15-20 minutes to sign-in and collect your room keys, but the number of residents checking-in, plus family members, plus all of their personal belongings, adds up to guaranteed long lines for the elevators.
Tip: Consider using the stairs if you live on a lower floor. The average building has 700 residents and only three elevators.
Tip: Bring your own wheels. Each building has only about a dozen carts that can be borrowed to move items into the building. Do not rely on the availability of a cart. Many residents bring their own hand-trucks, trolleys, or luggage carriers. You will be thankful you did!

Your Resident Assistant is a full-time junior, senior, or graduate student who serves as a peer counselor, a resource and referral person, an advocate, a programmer, a policy enforcer, and a group leader. Your RA will welcome you when you arrive at your floor and will be able to answer questions and help resolve any concerns you may have. Although our buildings are occupied throughout the entire year, the Department of Facilities Management has worked tirelessly to prepare your room. If, however, something in your room is not working properly, your RA will be able to assist you.
Things to bring
The following items may be needed, depending on personal preference, in all residence halls unless otherwise indicated in the information about your specific residence hall in the residence hall pages:
Bedding/linens: You will need extra long (80 inch) twin bed size flat and fitted sheets, blankets, bedspreads, and pillows. You will also need to provide your own towels and washcloths.
Personal items: Clothing, toiletries, medicines, books, study materials, and whatever else is necessary for you to live and work comfortably.
Cooking equipment: Residents in apartment-style buildings, which have stoves and refrigerators, provide their own cookware, dishes, and supplies. Toasters, toaster ovens, pressure cookers, and hot plates are prohibited in all residences for fire safety and electrical reasons.
Refrigerator and/or microwave: Apartment-style residence halls all have refrigerators, and some identified on the residence hall web pages have microwaves. Other residents may bring a small refrigerator (less than 5 cubic feet) and/or microwave, or arrange to rent them from private vendors. Coordinate plans with roommates/suitemates to avoid duplication and space problems. (Note: Founders Hall and Brittany Hall will have a small microwave/refrigerator in each suite to be shared by all residents within the suite.)
Room amenities: non-halogen desk or floor lamps, small area rugs, posters, alarm clock, clothes hangers. All windows have blinds, so curtains are not needed. Please note: only painter's tape can be used to post items on walls.
TV: Preferably a small flat-screen TV to allow use without disturbing roommates. Coordinate plans with roommates/suitemates to avoid duplication and space problems. If you are bringing a game console, streaming device or smart TV, you can connect the device to the NYU-media wireless network, by following these instructions.
All undergraduate residence halls have wireless internet service.
New York State and NYU required Vaccination
All NYU students are REQUIRED to comply with NYS and NYU immunization requirements. Students who have not submitted the appropriate documentation WILL NOT be permitted to check in to University housing. For more information please visit the Student Health Center’s website by clicking here.
What if I miss my check-in time?

There is no place on campus to check your bags. If you arrive earlier than your check-in time you will be integrated into the process at the end of the current time slot. Tip: Do not park your car and leave your bags unattended.
I am arriving later than the last reservation time. Can I still check-in (how late)?
Reception Desks are open until 10:00pm on check-in day. If you intend to arrive later than 10:00pm please call the residence hall office of your assigned hall so that arrangements can be made.
Can my parents stay in my room with me that night?
No. Rooms are small and space is limited. There are many hotels nearby where your parents will probably be far more comfortable. Take the evening to get to know your roommates/suitemates and floormates.
How late or early can I check-in after August 25th?
After August 25th, Residence Hall Resource Centers are open 10:00am-10:00pm daily.
I'm a first-year student. What if I can't check-in until after August 25th?
Please notify your residence hall what date you do plan on arriving so they will know when to expect you.
Can I send things to myself ahead of time?
No, packages can be sent only after you have checked in. Deliveries attempted prior to August 25th will be returned to sender.
Can I have guests over during move-in weekend?
This is strongly discouraged. Rooms are small and space is limited. There are many hotels nearby where your guests will probably be far more comfortable. Take the evening to get to know your roommates/suitemates and floor mates.
Can I change my room if I decide I don't like it?

Can I bring furniture?
Your room is provided with a bed, mattress, desk, desk chair, and trash can. For fire safety purposes you may not bring your own furniture. Please note, the university will not remove unwanted pieces of furniture from your room.
