Students enrolled in NYU-sponsored Student Health Insurance Plans

Will my health insurance still cover me?

If you participate in the NYU sponsored student health insurance plans, administered by Wellfleet Group, LLC (i.e., the Washington Square “Basic” and “Comprehensive” Plans and the Tandon School of Engineering “Tandon” Plan):

  • Your current benefits will not change.
  • Your coverage will remain in effect for the period you originally purchased it.
  • The Plans will continue to offer national coverage for medically necessary healthcare services. Both the Washington Square and Tandon plans offer coverage for services rendered by healthcare providers who participate in the CIGNA PPO network. Visit to search for CIGNA PPO providers. Out-of-network providers are also covered but at a lower reimbursement level.
  • In response to many inquiries, there is no exclusion for healthcare services delivered during a pandemic.

Do I still need a referral from the SHC?

Given the unique situation that continues to evolve around the coronavirus, students with NYU-sponsored Student Health Insurance (Washington Square “Basic” and “Comprehensive Plans”) are no longer required to seek a referral from the NYU Student Health Center before accessing care in Manhattan. The referral exception will remain in place until further notice.

Will my insurance cover Coronavirus testing and treatment?

Wellfleet is waiving out-of-pocket costs for all COVID-19 treatment until further notice. We’ll waive all co-pays, deductibles and co-insurance. Similar to a preventative visit, like your annual physical, you’ll have no out-of-pocket costs for your treatment. This applies to Wellfleet Insurance Carrier plans.

Wellfleet will continue to cover student member costs for COVID-19 testing. For additional coverage information specific to your school, visit your school’s page on or call our dedicated Coronavirus hotline – (833) 343-5338. Hours of operation are Monday – Friday 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Wellfleet Student members should contact their student health care centers or visit their school’s page on to find a provider. When contacting, be sure to advise them of your recent travel and symptoms and try to avoid contact with others.

Students not enrolled in NYU-sponsored Student Health Insurance

Will my health insurance still cover me?

If you do not participate in the NYU sponsored student health insurance plans, i.e., you “waived” this coverage and are using your own or your parents’ insurance coverage, then you most likely remain covered but should contact your insurance carrier to verify the particular terms of your coverage.
