Psychiatric Services

Since psychiatry is a medical subspecialty, the SHC charges a fee for psychiatric in-person and virtual services. SHC bills your insurance provider for psychiatric services and you will be responsible for any charges not covered by your insurance plan.

Counseling (talk therapy) services (including individual counseling, group counseling, and wellness workshops) and all services at the Wellness Exchange including urgent psychiatric care are at no cost for all students.

Students with NYU-sponsored Student Health Insurance (Wellfleet)

Since the SHC is in-network with Wellfleet, you will only owe a copayment for psychiatric services. For information about coverage and copayments, please visit the Student Health Insurance website or contact Wellfleet at (877) 373-1170 or www.wellfleetstudent.com/nyu.

To download a copy of your insurance ID card with your subscriber number, go to the Wellfleet website and click the link for “Online ID Card.” You will need this information anytime you purchase medications at a pharmacy or obtain medical services outside SHC.

Students with Other Health Insurance

(e.g. Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, etc.)

We are out-of-network with these insurance plans. You will be responsible for our professional fee and for any applicable coinsurance or deductible, as stated in your plan benefits. We will send a bill to your insurance company, but If your insurance company denies payment for psychiatric services received at the SHC, you will be responsible for the full payment. For information about your coverage and benefits, please call the customer service number listed on the back of your insurance card.

Since your out-of-pocket expenses are generally lower for services from an in-network provider, it may be financially advantageous for you to pursue psychiatric treatment off-campus with an in-network provider.

Your psychiatric clinician will assist you with referrals and help you with finding a provider who best fits your particular needs. We will provide psychiatric services to you during the transition period.

In case you need a copy of your psychiatric records for your new provider, please complete the Authorization for Release of Counseling Information.
