Stressbusters is a fun and far-reaching community wellness program. It dispatches volunteer teams of students to provide free five-minute backrubs and stress relief information to other NYU students at campus events, residence halls, organization meetings, libraries and wherever else the stressed gather – day and night.

According to a 2004 University of Illinois review of 37 studies on the effects of backrubs and massages, the types of brief backrubs provided by Stressbusters can reduce anxiety, blood pressure, and heart rate.

Weekly Events

The Stressbusters hold weekly events for NYU students during Fall and Spring semesters. Our weekly events during the second week of classes and continue until the last day of classes.

Come see us Mondays from 5pm-6pm at the Academic Resource Center!

In addition to providing relaxing backrubs, we always come equipped with health information and resources from the SHC’s Health Promotion office, such as stress reduction guides, stress toys and Tip Cards. We do not provide food or therapy dogs at our events.

New This Year

We are expanding certain aspects of the Stressbuster program and reevaluate others. Stressbusters plan to conduct research on campus about the ways in which stress affects students and how that information might inform new initiatives around stress.

Our Stressbusters want to identify and address stressors within the NYU environment and design initiatives that support students in managing their stress beyond the immediate benefit of a 5 minute backrub.  

According to the 2015 American College Health Association National College Health Assessment survey, stress is the primary impediment to academic success for students at NYU.
