Competitive candidates for the fellowship will have the following characteristics:
Commitment to Public Service. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a passion for public service through their academic studies and work experience including full-time, part-time, volunteer or internship positions. In their applications, candidates should also be able to convey an interest in refining a vision for long-term engagement with public service through the social sector.
Self Awareness and Capacity for Leadership. The ideal candidate will have exercised leadership in some professional capacity, volunteer activity, internship role or community/campus organization. All candidates should also be able to articulate a few of their leadership strengths as well as areas where they want to build leadership capacity through the fellowship.
Academic Achievement. Applicants must be in good academic standing within a NYU masters level degree program.
In assembling the group of participants, we are looking to construct a cohort that: (1) demonstrates racial and ethnic diversity within underrepresented minority groups; (2) is drawn from graduate schools across NYU; and (3) reflects a broad range of social sector career interests.
Fellows are expected to fully participate in all monthly learning sessions, which are expected to take place on Friday afternoons from 3pm to 5pm at sites across NYU's campus.
Fellows are expected to:
Fully participate in the entire fellowship experience - This includes attending all learning sessions; completing all pre- and post-session assignments (approximately 3-5 hours of work per month); and sharing thoughts, experiences and resources with other Fellows throughout the fellowship cycle. Fellows may not miss more than three learning sessions throughout the entire fellowship cycle and no more than one session per semester.
Strive for academic and professional excellence - Fellows are expected to pursue excellence in all of their academic endeavors and to seek out meaningful professional opportunities (internships, externships, volunteer positions, etc.) that will help supplement their studies.
Contribute to the cohort experience - All Fellows are expected to consider themselves as part of a growing, ongoing fellowship network. Fellows should offer their time, energy and constructive feedback to improve the program for themselves, cohort members and future Fellows.
SSLD Fellowship is not a scholarship. It is a leadership development that invests in its fellows at no cost to its participants.
Much of the fellowship curriculum is designed to draw upon past work and leadership experience. As such, students with no professional experience are not likely to gain maximum value from the program. Students with one or fewer years of professional experience should only apply if they can demonstrate significant volunteer or internship experience prior to enrolling in a graduate degree program. This experience should involve some form of social change work/public service work.
All applicants must be enrolled in and working toward the completion of a master's/JD degree program at NYU. Students who are attending an NYU master's degree program part-time are eligible to apply. Non-matriculated students are not eligible to apply.
We strongly encourage any eligible students with an interest in public service work to apply. This includes people who are considering careers in nonprofit organizations, government agencies, offices of public officials, foundations, think tanks, and private sector business/corporations focused on public service.
Regardless of their background and career goals, all Fellows will explore their areas of interests; learn about other ways to take up social sector leadership; gain leadership skills for a broad spectrum of social change work; and build sustainable networks across social sector industries to allow for effective collaboration after graduation.
