Methodology and Definitions
Definitions
Cell Size: Cells with 5 or more students are displayed; cells with values of <5 are marked "N/A."
Sex: Legal sex is reported
US Minorities: Students are included in this category if they are categorized for federal reporting as African American/Black, American Indian, Hispanic/Latina/Latino, or Pacific Islander. Students in the Two or More Races category are not included. They are grouped in the US Other category, which also includes students whose ethnicity is unknown.
Applications
Students Selection: Only Fall applicants are included
Term Categorization: Students are grouped by the term for which they applied regardless of when they applied
Selectivity Rate: The selectivity rate is the ratio of admitted students to applications
Yield Rate: The yield rate is the ratio of matriculated students to admitted students
Data Refresh: Applications data are updated annually in the fall
Program Enrollment
Student Count (Dashboard): The enrollment counts are for students enrolled or “maintaining matriculation” as of the fall census. The maintaining matriculation status permits advanced graduate students to remain continuously matriculated while completing their dissertations while paying a fee instead of tuition.
Distinct Student Count (Table Data): In the detail tables distinct student counts are shown in order to provide program level data while avoiding small cell sizes. The counts are of distinct students enrolled or maintaining matriculation at any time during the the five years for which data are reported. A student enrolled in multiple years is counted only once.
Programs: Only currently active programs are included
Data Refresh: Program enrollment data are updated annually in the fall
Completions
Cohorts: Completion outcomes are displayed for entry cohorts
Students Retained: Students are counted as retained if they are enrolled or maintaining matriculation during the academic year for which the data are updated. Students who received a master’s degree and are still enrolled are counted as retained.
Data Refresh: Completions data are updated annually in the winter
Time to Degree
Cohorts: Time to degree is calculated for graduating cohorts
Exclusions: The cohorts excludes students who pursued a professional degree as well as a PhD, such as those in MD/PhD programs
Entry Point: Time to degree is calculated from the time a student enrolled at NYU as a graduate student. That may be in a program different from the one the student completes.
Time Calculation: Time to degree is calculated as elapsed time between the start of the student’s first term and the end of the term in which he/she completes the PhD. A student who enters in the fall and completes the PhD in the spring of the sixth year has a time-to-degree of 5.7 years.
Data Refresh: Time-to-degree data are updated annually in the winter
