The fringe benefits rate for federal sponsored programs is 30.0% until amended. The projected rate is to be used in budget projections for FY21 and beyond. The fringe benefits rate used for federal programs is also used for all sponsored programs that are budgeted in Funds 24, 25 and 60.

Projecting Outyear Inflationary Increases for Proposal Budgeting

OSP advises applicants to include projected annual increases for direct costs in sponsor proposals as an accurate estimate of the cost of conducting the project and to request commensurate support. When a sponsor specifically indicates inflationary increases are allowable (consistent with NYU’s institutional policy/guidance) but may not be awarded, it is at the discretion of the Principal Investigator as to whether those increases be included in the proposal budget.

For example, NIH allows for the inclusion of annual inflationary increases in its proposals but annual fiscal funding policy at specific NIH institutes may prohibit the awarding of those costs.

Regardless of the sponsor, when year to year inflationary increases are included in the proposal budget they should be clearly and adequately justified to document for the sponsor the need for additional funding support.
