This site has been established to provide access to all Federal and University animal welfare laws, regulations, policies and guidelines concerning animals used in research and teaching. The UAWC has curated a selection of important resources, including the Guide to the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, to help inform your work. These are located under the Resources tab within Informative References.
For projects involving the use of recombinant DNA or viral vectors, an Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) registration is required. This necessitates the completion of a form by the PI and all laboratory staff handling these materials in order to generate a Kerberos ID allowing Washington Square personnel access to the IBC Module.
Please refer to the IBC Registration website to initiate this process and the IBC Module to complete the application. Please be advised that for these projects, UAWC protocol approval cannot be issued until IBC approval is obtained. Lab Safety and Hazardous Waste trainings are required for all persons working in research laboratories and are facilitated by Environmental Health & Safety. Biosafety training is also required for research staff working with recombinant DNA or viral vectors. Please review the Biosafety webpage for the training schedule and further details.
The buttons below provide you with what you need to know to begin writing your protocols. Always make sure to download the protocol form from the Protocol Review Forms page to ensure you are using the most current version.
For the purpose of writing grant proposals, the Public Health Service (PHS) assurance number for the UAWC is A3317-01.
If you have any questions or concerns about this process, feel free to contact the UAWC at firstname.lastname@example.org.
