The Global Research Institutes were created in Athens, Berlin, Florence, London, Madrid Paris, Prague, Shanghai, Tel Aviv and Washington, D.C., to support NYU full-time faculty and graduate students, based in New York City, who wish to have NYU infrastructural support while conducting research abroad. To visit and work at NYU's center in Athens and conduct site-specific research, faculty and graduate students must apply and be accepted as GRI fellows. The opportunity to study both ancient and modern articulations of interdisciplinary issues (spanning from macroeconomics, to cinema, to classics) distinguishes Athens within the GRI network.

Graduate students and faculty from the humanities, the sciences, and the social sciences from various NYU schools have visited the GRI Research Institute in Athens to advance their work and conduct site-specific research.
