What to Bring
What to Bring
Storage space in student rooms is limited (usually just a small closet, dresser, and under bed space), so don't overdo it, and coordinate bringing large items with your roommates where possible.
The following items may be needed, depending on personal preference, in all residence halls unless otherwise indicated in the information about your specific residence hall in the residence hall pages:
Adaptors (& Converters)
Don't forget to bring at least one universal adaptor (and converter) that will be useful if you decide to travel around Europe as the type of plug can be different by country. UK plug sockets take a 3-pinned fused plug. Do check that all your electrical equipment will work on this voltage before you arrive. Do only bring over electrical items that are dual voltage 110-120/220-240v; laptops are usually dual voltage, for example.
Clothing & Towels
Do bring your own towel for the regular semesters (Fall and Spring) as these are not provided. If staying for the full regular semester (Fall and Spring) then do remember to pack clothing suitable for different seasons as the UK climate is notoriously erratic.
Computers & Insurance
Bring your tablets and laptops, with adapters (see below).
NYU recommends that all students take out insurance for their personal effects at any campus or academic center. While not mandatory that you undertake this insurance, we do strongly recommend that students consider personal property coverage for their time away, in particular if they are bringing high-value electronic items like laptops, tablets, smartphones, and plan to use these while traveling, etc.
The CSI Insurance Agency can provide personal property / effects insurance for you while abroad. This is the same company that offers a similar policy for students' personal items on the NYU campus in New York. You can find more information here.
Questions about this coverage should be directed to CSI Insurance Agency directly.
Luggage
Bringing your luggage is obvious but do think about appropriately sized luggage that you can use to take with you on your travels whilst you are in Europe. Airlines, especially budget airliners have strict luggage (baggage) size dimensions.
Personal/Special Items
You may want to bring your own medication, toiletries and whatever else is necessary for you to live and work comfortably and perhaps some photographs, books that are special to you or anything that will remind you of home like certain foods (non-perishable).
What not to bring
Bedding and linens
You won't need to bring any sheets, blankets or pillows as these are provided when you arrive in London.
Cooking Equipment
All residents will be provided with cookware, utensils and dishes so there is enough to get you started. Don't bring hot plates or deep fat fryers.
Furniture
Each bedroom is furnished with the essentials like beds, desks, chairs, wardrobes, and storage units so there is no need to purchase any other furniture. Any extra furniture purchased must be in line with housing policy/external housing tenancy agreement.
Weapons of any kind
This includes but not limited to firearms, fireworks, ammunition, knives, swords, or explosives.
Candles, incense, bongs, hookah pipes
These contravene NYU London fire policies.
Decorative Lights and Halogen Lamps
These contravene NYU London fire policies.
Electric Heaters
All flats are fully fitted with central heating and air conditioning, so no heaters should be necessary.
