Before an emergency, leaders should encourage and support preparedness efforts, including continuity planning for critical campus functions.

During an emergency, leaders should remain calm and remember to do three things:

1. Be Present: The people you lead will look to you for guidance. Be present to them as you learn of the emergency and its impacts on the campus.

2. Make Decisions: Emergencies often require decision making without complete information. Make decisions and keep making decisions based on the best information available.

3. Communicate: Identify ahead of time key internal and external audiences to address in an emergency. During the emergency, communicate appropriately with those audiences. Also, reach out to the Department of Public Safety with any questions or concerns you may have.
