I am a new services employee at NYU. What information can I get from EHS?
EHS can assist with, including but not limited to, trainings, job hazard analyses, chemical inventory management, disposal of hazardous and universal wastes, and personal protective equipment.
Is black mold dangerous?
Mold growing on surfaces (walls, chairs, ceilings), no matter the color,is an indication of a water leak or high humidity. Mold can cause a reaction if you are allergic to it, however small areas of mold growth are not a major health hazard. In most cases visual mold can be cleaned with a 10% bleach solution. The source of water or moisture must be addressed or the mold growth will recur.
Can EHS test my air?
EHS can arrange to have Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) testing in any space. However, before testing, it is important to consider that any and all "air quality" issues have a source. Potential sources include moisture or mold, a chemical/cleaner being used, construction in the building or at a neighboring building. Additional information is often needed to determine the best course of action. In most cases EHS will work with the Facility Manager to determine if the activities in the area may be contributing to poor air quality. Often times air supply issues (HVAC issues) may contribute to stuffiness or lack of air flow. Working collaboratively with Facility Management, assessing the area holistically, and pinpointing the possible source will often times more quickly correct the issue. EHS can evaluate the basic air quality parameters in an effort to help pinpoint the possible source of an odor.
I live in Faculty Housing. Is there lead based paint in my apartment?
Older residential buildings typically have lead based paint. There is a program in place that satisfies NYC Local Law I. If there is a child under the age of six that resides in the apartment, annually the apartment is rested/visually assessed for paint condition. Typically if there is lead based paint, it is in the original/underlying layer of paint. Apartments have been renovated and painted over the years. If you have any questions or would like to arrange for a LBP inspection in your apartment, please contact the CSC at 212-998-1001.
