To: The NYU Community

From: Dr. Carlo Ciotoli, Exec. Lead, NYU COVID-19 Prevention & Response Team

As the end of the fall 2020 semester and winter break approaches, we want to share the plans for testing the members of the community as they leave campus, for maintaining testing for those who remain on campus, and for testing for the start of the spring semester.

Testing Preparations for Those Leaving Campus for the Winter Break

Winter break officially begins on the end of the day on Wednesday, December 23; we realize that many people leave for break before that.

We would like everyone currently on campus who plans to leave for winter break to be tested in the 10 days before their departure.

For Students in Residence Halls

Continue with regular weekly testing, making sure that you are tested within 10 days of your departure.

For Non-Resident Students

Students with NetIDs beginning A-J are scheduled to be regularly tested this week (the week of December 7); those with NetIDs beginning K-Z are scheduled to be regularly tested next week (the week of December 14). To the extent your scheduled test aligns with the 10 day period before your departure, stick with it; to the extent you need to take an additional or off-week test before departing, you should plan to do that.

For Employees

Employees with NetIDs beginning A-J are scheduled to be regularly tested this week (the week of December 7); the K-Z group is scheduled to be regularly tested next week (the week of December 14). To the extent your scheduled test aligns with the 10 day period before your departure, stick with it; to the extent you need to take an additional or off-week test before departing, you should plan to do that.

Testing Preparations for Those Continuing to Access Campus During the Winter Break

The campus is largely closed during the winter break (December 24 - January 3) and most people are away from campus; however, some students remain in housing, essential employees continue to report to their posts, some researchers carry on their work, etc. All those accessing campus facilities during the week of December 28 are required to be tested that week.

We will carry on a modified testing program for those who will continue to be on campus for winter break: for the weeks of December 21 and December 28th, all testing will be done by nasal swab at the Bonomi Admissions Center at 27 West 4 St. The Binx saliva test distribution sites will not be open during winter break. If you do not plan to enter any NYU buildings (including residence halls) prior to the spring semester, you do not need to test.

Testing Preparations for Return to Campus Following Winter Break

Officially, campus operations resume on Monday, January 4, and spring semester classes resume Thursday, January 28; practically speaking, returns to campus vary greatly over that period.

To resume access to NYU facilities following winter break:

  • All those returning between January 4 and before January 25 must be tested within 24 hours of arrival
  • All those returning January 25 onwards must be tested in the 14 days period prior to the date of their return.

We will be coming back to you soon with more detailed specifics concerning testing requirements and required quarantining. Students in housing will today receive a survey requesting more information as to their travel plans. Should New York State requirements or public health guidance change, we will be in touch with updated information.
