Tech Resources for the End of the Semester
Check out the tech resources that can help you finish the semester, or take a look at NYU IT's Student Tech Guide below for an overview of services, tutorials, tips, and more.
Do This First
Get NYU Email on Your Mobile Device
In your email app of choice, select the option to add a new account, and choose the “Google” option. Enter yourNetID@nyu.edu as the address, then click Next. You will be brought to the purple NYU login screen to continue.
If you need additional instructions, they can be found at http://www.nyu.edu/servicelink/KB0016472.
Also, set up NYU Calendar and other NYU Google Apps on your mobile device.
Optimize Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for Your Devices
Once you’ve enrolled in NYU Multi-Factor Authentication, you can add or update your MFA devices anytime via the NYU Start Page. NYU suggests that you enroll at least two devices and/or phone numbers in NYU MFA.
Download and Activate the Duo App
Download the Duo Mobile App app to your smartphone.
Allow Duo to send you notifications.
Accept the license agreement.
Do not click on "Add account" at this point.
Turn on Push Notifications for the Duo App
The Duo Mobile app "Send Me a Push" option is the best way to use NYU MFA.
Set Up Duo Push as Your Default
- If you haven't already, download and install the Duo Mobile app
- Log in at start.nyu.edu
- At the Duo prompt, don’t approve your authentication yet. Instead, click My Settings & Devices in the left menu, then authenticate.
- On the My Settings & Devices screen, select these options:
Default Device: Select your phone number
When I log in: Automatically send this device to a Duo Push
Click Save and you’re all set!
- Now, just tap Approve on the Duo login request on your device to authenticate.
Add MFA to Another Device
To register one or more eligible devices/phone numbers with NYU's Multi-Factor Authentication vendor, Duo, use a web browser to log into the NYU Start page (start.nyu.edu) with your NetID and password.
Spring 2021 In-Class Experience
Classroom Seating Assignments
If you plan to attend a course in-person this semester, you will be asked to use the new Classroom Seating Assignments tool in NYU Classes to record your seat preference for the semester. Learn more about it.
When physically in a classroom, do not join the Zoom meeting. Your audio/video will be through the in-room screen.
NYU Print Service
Looking to print? Check out NYU Print Service for the latest updates on printer locations.
Student Computer Labs
For hours of operations for Computer Access and Printer Service, visit Student Technology Centers.
IT Service Desk
Walk-in IT Service Desk support will remain unavailable in the US this fall. However, in-person appointments at 10 Astor Place in New York can now be booked in advance by completing this form. (A self-service scheduling tool will be available soon; please check back.) 24x7 support by phone (212-998-3333) and email (AskIT@nyu.edu) remains available at all NYU locations.
Secure Your Network and Accounts with NYU VPN
NYU’s Virtual Private Network (VPN) provides secure, remote access to the NYU network (NYU-NET). Available at all of NYU’s locations, VPN encrypts your network traffic and enables access to NYU services that would otherwise require you to be on campus.
Connect Devices in a Residence Hall
Look for the wireless network called “nyu” and connect to it. Your username is your NetID, and your password is the same password that you use to log in to other NYU services.
Each NYU dorm room has ethernet jacks for wired internet access. Make sure that you have an ethernet cable and, if necessary, an ethernet adapter for your device.
Nyu-Media for Gaming and Smart Home Devices
Some devices, such as streaming sticks, gaming consoles, and smart home devices, may not be able to connect to "nyu" network. You can connect those to “nyu-media” instead. Directions can be found here.
Personal Printers in Residence Halls
If you’re bringing a printer, make sure you have the correct USB cable to connect the printer to your device. Wireless printers will not work on NYU’s wireless network. The NYU Print Service lets you access NYU Printers throughout campus, including many Residence Hall buildings. You can print up to 500 pages per semester free of charge.
Need a loaner? Chromebooks available for two-week loans
If you need a computer on a short-term basis, you can borrow a Chromebook for two weeks with a one-week extension possible, based on availability / waitlist. The supply is limited. For questions, or to request a Chromebook, contact email@example.com.
NYU IT Service Desk is available 24x7. Please email if not urgent.
