Tech Services for Students
Whether you're new to NYU or you're a returning community member, NYU IT is here to make it easy for you to find and use essential tech services.
NYU Brightspace is the University's online learning management system. Review the NYU Brightspace student page for checklists, getting started guides, self-paced learning, and training.
Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for Your Devices
Once you’ve enrolled in NYU Multi-Factor Authentication, you can add or update your MFA devices anytime via the NYU Start Page. NYU suggests that you enroll at least two devices and/or phone numbers in NYU MFA.
Download and Activate the Duo App
Download the Duo Mobile App app to your smartphone.
Allow Duo to send you notifications.
Accept the license agreement.
Do not click on "Add account" at this point.
Turn on Push Notifications for the Duo App
The Duo Mobile app "Send Me a Push" option is the best way to use NYU MFA.
Set Up Duo Push as Your Default
- If you haven't already, download and install the Duo Mobile app
- Log in at start.nyu.edu
- At the Duo prompt, don’t approve your authentication yet. Instead, click My Settings & Devices in the left menu, then authenticate.
- On the My Settings & Devices screen, select these options:
Default Device: Select your phone number
When I log in: Automatically send this device to a
Click Save and you’re all set!
- Now, just tap Approve on the Duo login request on your device to authenticate.
Add MFA to Another Device
To register one or more eligible devices/phone numbers with NYU's Multi-Factor Authentication vendor, Duo, use a web browser to log into the NYU Start page (start.nyu.edu) with your NetID and password.
Get NYU Email on Your Mobile Device
In your email app of choice, select the option to add a new account, and choose the “Google” option. Enter yourNetID@nyu.edu as the address, then click Next. You will be brought to the purple NYU login screen to continue. Additional instructions available here.
Also, set up NYU Calendar and other NYU Google Apps on your mobile device.
Make Sure You Can Recover Your Password
For new students, once your admission to NYU is confirmed, check your NYU password recovery email address to ensure you can reset your password if you need to. For example: use a Gmail or Yahoo address, not a high school address that will expire. To do so:
- Go to the NYU Start Page: start.nyu.edu.
- Click Log In, then log in with your NetID and password.
- Authenticate using NYU Multi-Factor Authentication. (Follow the steps to enroll if you haven't already done so.)
- Click Security Settings.
- Verify or update the address in the Password Recovery Email Address and confirmation fields.
- Scroll down and click Continue.
- On the next two screens, click Confirm and Continue, then you're all set.
- While you're there, we also recommend that you set up a mobile app as another password recovery method.
NYU-Media for Gaming and Smart Home Devices
Some devices, such as streaming sticks, gaming consoles, and smart home devices, may not be able to connect to "nyu" network. You can connect those to “nyu-media” instead. Read the directions.
Keep Your Computer Safe with Antivirus and Malware Protection
All computers connecting to NYU’s network must be equipped with antivirus and malware protection. Download and install Endpoint Protection (Symantec).
Connect Devices in a Residence Hall
Look for the Wi-Fi network called “nyu” and connect to it. Your username is your NetID, and your password is the same password that you use to log in to other NYU services.
Each NYU dorm room has ethernet jacks for wired internet access. Make sure that you have an ethernet cable and, if necessary, an ethernet adapter for your device.
NYU-Media for Gaming and Smart Home Devices
Some devices, such as streaming sticks, gaming consoles, and smart home devices, may not be able to connect to the "nyu" network. You can connect those to “nyu-media” instead. Directions can be found here.
Personal Printers in Residence Halls
If you’re bringing a printer, make sure you have the correct USB cable to connect the printer to your device. Wireless printers will not work on NYU’s wireless network. The NYU Print Service lets you access NYU Printers throughout campus, including many Residence Hall buildings. You can print up to 500 pages per semester free of charge.
Secure Your Network and Accounts with NYU VPN
NYU’s Virtual Private Network (VPN) provides secure, remote access to the NYU network (NYU-NET). Available at all of NYU’s locations, VPN encrypts your network traffic and enables access to NYU services that would otherwise require you to be on campus.
Financial Support for Purchasing Academic Technology
Students in need of financial support in purchasing academic technology can refer to the NYU Student Emergency Fund page.
Emergency Broadband Benefit:
Some students may be eligible for an FCC program that provides support for broadband services. Please visit the Emergency Broadband Benefit Program page for more information.
