New York University is pleased to announce the recipients of honorary degrees at this year's All-University Commencement Exercises.

The 2019 honorary degree recipients are: Elizabeth Alexander, poet and President of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation; Abdel Kader Haidara, Malian researcher, manuscripts prospector, and executive president of the SAVAMA-DCI NGO; Carla Hayden, The Librarian of Congress; Douglas R. Lowy (MED '68), Acting Director, National Cancer Institute; and Terrence McNally, playwright. Dr. Alexander will deliver remarks on behalf of the honorary degree recipients.

The University will also present special awards at a pre-Commencement event. The Gallatin Medal for Outstanding Contributions to Society will be presented to John Sexton, President Emeritus of New York University and Dean Emeritus and Benjamin F. Butler Professor of Law, NYU School of Law. The Rudin Medal for Distinguished Service to New York City will be presented to Martin Lipton, Chair Emeritus of the NYU Board of Trustees and Founding Partner, Wachtell Lipton Rosen & Katz. Yu Lizhong, Chancellor of NYU Shanghai, will receive the Presidential Medal.
