Visa for NYU Prague
There are a number of factors that need to be considered when determining if a faculty member or researcher needs to obtain a visa in advance of traveling to the Czech Republic. These factors include: country of citizenship, duration of the trip, prior recent travel to the Schengen region, and the purpose or activity required during the trip. If in doubt, please contact the Office of Global Services (OGS) as early as possible.
Prepare for Your Stay in the Czech Republic
Before beginning STEP 1, be sure to have a valid passport.
- A valid passport should have at least six months beyond expected return date and at minimum, two blank visa pages.
STEP 1
Complete the Immigration Assistance Request Form
Typical Timeframe: 0-1 Days
- Faculty member completes the Immigration Assistance Request Form.
STEP 2
Book an Appointment with OGS
Typical Timeframe: 1-10 Days
- OGS identifies proper immigration path for the intended trip and contacts faculty member.
- If OGS determines a visa and Czech Employment Card are needed, faculty member books an appointment with OGS.
- If OGS determines a visa and Czech Employment Card are needed, faculty member books an appointment with OGS.
STEP 3
Gather Documents and Share with OGS
Typical Timeframe: 30-90 Days
- Faculty member gathers their immigration and travel documents and shares with OGS via NYU Box.
STEP 5
OGS Prepares Proof of Accommodations and Czech Health Insurance
Typical Timeframe: 15-30 Days/Concurrent with STEP 4
- OGS works with NYU Prague site staff to obtain proof of accommodations and Czech health insurance for the faculty member, both of which are required for the Czech visa.
STEP 6
Book Consulate Appointment
Typical Timeframe: 1-30 Days/Concurrent with STEP 5
- Faculty member books consulate appointment, if relevant.
- Email Czech Consulate (visa.ny@mzv.cz) requesting a visa appointment for a long-stay Schengen visa for work.
STEP 7
Review Visa Application Materials with OGS
Typical Timeframe: 1 Day
- Prior to consulate appointment, faculty member returns to OGS to have visa application materials reviewed.
STEP 8
Attend Consulate Appointment
Typical Timeframe: 1 Day
- Faculty member attends consulate appointment to submit visa application.
STEP 9
Check Status of Visa Processing
Typical Timeframe: 90-120 Day
- Faculty member checks status of visa processing via the online New York Czech Consulate long term visa approved list.
STEP 10
Pick up Visa and Passport
Typical Timeframe: 1 Day
- Faculty member returns to consulate to pick up visa and passport.
STEP 11
Travel to Destination
Typical Timeframe: N/A
- Faculty member travels to destination and enters showing their passport and visa.
STEP 12
Register with the Ministry of the Interior
Typical Timeframe: 1 Day
- If applicable, faculty member registers with the Ministry of the Interior within three days of arrival.
STEP 13
Register with the Czech Labor Office
Typical Timeframe: 1 Day
- If applicable, faculty member registers with the Czech Labor Office.
STEP 14
Complete Suggested Travel Practices
Typical Timeframe: Prior to travel
