Visa for NYU Paris
There are a number of factors that need to be considered when determining if a faculty member or researcher needs to obtain a visa in advance of traveling to France. These factors include: country of citizenship, duration of the trip, prior recent travel to the Schengen region, and the purpose or activity required during the trip. If in doubt, please contact the Office of Global Services (OGS) as early as possible.
Prepare for Your Stay in France
Before beginning STEP 1, be sure to have a valid passport.
- A valid passport should have at least six months beyond expected return date and at minimum, two blank visa pages.
STEP 1
Complete the Immigration Assistance Request Form
Typical Timeframe: 0-1 Days
- Faculty member completes the Immigration Assistance Request Form.
STEP 2
Book an Appointment with OGS
Typical Timeframe: 1-10 Days
- OGS identifies proper immigration path for the intended trip and contacts faculty member.
- If OGS determines a visa is needed, faculty member books an appointment with OGS.
- If OGS determines a visa is needed, faculty member books an appointment with OGS.
STEP 3
Gather Documents and Share with OGS
Typical Timeframe: 1-30 Days
- Faculty member gathers their immigration and travel documents and shares with OGS via NYU Box.
STEP 4
File Convention d’Accueil (Hosting Agreement) and/or Work Authorization Application
Typical Timeframe: 30-60 Days
- OGS will work with NYU Paris site staff to complete the in-country required hosting agreement.
- If work authorization is required, OGS will work with faculty member, their department or school, and outside counsel to file application.
STEP 5
Book Visa Appointment
Typical Timeframe: 1-30 Days/Concurrent with STEP 4
- Faculty member creates an account and books visa appointment with VFS Global, if relevant.
STEP 6
Review Visa Application Materials with OGS
Typical Timeframe: 0-1 Day
- Prior to consulate appointment, faculty member returns to OGS to have visa application materials reviewed including the online application completed in Step 5. Faculty member should print visa application and appointment confirmation.
STEP 7
Attend Visa Appointment
Typical Timeframe: 1 Day
- Faculty member attends visa appointment at VFS Application Center for biometric collection and in-person interview.
STEP 8
Pick up Visa and Passport
Typical Timeframe: 1 Day
- Faculty member returns to VFS Application Center to pick up visa and passport.
- Limited courier services only available in certain locations.
STEP 9
Travel to Destination
Typical Timeframe: N/A
- Faculty member travels to destination and enters showing their passport and visa.
STEP 10
Apply for Residence Permit
Typical Timeframe: 2-3 Months
- If applicable, faculty member applies for residence permit at OFII Office.
- Faculty member applies in-person at OFII Office via the assistance of the French university partner.
- Faculty member receives residence permit including OFII stamp in approximately 2-3 months.
STEP 11
Complete Suggested Travel Practices
