There are a number of factors that need to be considered when determining if a faculty member or researcher needs to obtain a visa in advance of traveling to Argentina. These factors include: country of citizenship, duration of the trip, and the purpose or activity required during the trip. If in doubt, please contact the Office of Global Services (OGS) as early as possible.

Prepare for Your Stay in Argentina

Before beginning STEP 1, be sure to have a valid passport.

  • A valid passport should have at least six months beyond expected return date and at minimum, two blank visa pages.

For Citizens of Visa Exempt Countries

Faculty members who are citizens of visa exempt countries, which includes the United States, will follow the process below:

STEP 1

Complete the Immigration Assistance Request Form

Typical Timeframe: 0-1 Days

STEP 2

Book an Appointment with OGS

Typical Timeframe: 1-10 Days

  • OGS identifies proper immigration path for the intended trip and contacts faculty member.
    • Faculty members is who are citizens of visa exempt countries (which includes the United States) will travel to Argentina and obtain an Entry Permit 24-A upon arrival. After arrival, the faculty member will apply for work and residence authorization.
    • OGS will coordinate with NYU Buenos Aires and in-country immigration law firm to arrange an appointment to apply for work permit (see documents below that may be required in STEP 3).

STEP 3

Gather Documents and Share with OGS

Typical Timeframe: 1-30 Days

  • Faculty member gathers their immigration and travel documents and shares with OGS via NYU Box.

STEP 4

Travel to Destination

Typical Timeframe: N/A

  • Faculty member travels to destination and enters showing their passport and visa.

STEP 5

Apply for Temporary Residence Permit

Typical Timeframe: 30-60 Days

  • Once in Argentina, the faculty member registers their address with the local police office. The faculty member should also obtain an address certificate from the police in-person which will be required for the DNI.

STEP 6

Apply for National Identity Document (DNI)

Typical Timeframe: 1-5 Days

  • Faculty member books an appointment with the immigration office to obtain a DNI.
  • At the same appointment, the faculty member registers for a CUIL ID (tax ID card).  The CUIL ID is required in order to legally work in Argentina.
  • The Immigration Office typically approves the application and grants the DNI after approximately 30 days.

For Non-Citizens of Visa Exempt Countries

Faculty members who are not citizens of a visa exempt country will follow the process below:

STEP 1

Complete the Immigration Assistance Request Form

Book an Appointment with OGS

Typical Timeframe: 1-10 Days

  • OGS identifies proper immigration path for the intended trip and contacts faculty member.
  • Faculty member books an appointment with OGS.
    • If a faculty member is not a citizen of a visa exempt country, they will require a visa in advance of travel.

STEP 3

Gather Documents and Share with OGS

Typical Timeframe: 1-30 Days

  • Faculty member gathers their immigration and travel documents and shares with OGS via NYU Box.

STEP 4

NYU Buenos Aires applies for Entry Permit In Advance

Typical Timeframe: 30-60 Days

  • If an Entry permit is required, OGS will work with the faculty member, their department or school, NYU Buenos Aires, and outside counsel (if needed) to file Entry permit application - the entry permit must reach the consulate prior to the faculty member’s visa appointment.
  • As part of the Entry permit application, Faculty member obtains police clearance report* for every country in which they have lived in at least once during the last 3 years.

* Required for semester or longer stays

STEP 5

Complete Online Visa Application and Book Appointment

Typical Timeframe: 0-1 Day

  • Faculty member completes online visa application and books appointment with consulate by emailing: visas@cnyor.com. Appointments are available on Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays from 10:00AM to 12:30PM.

STEP 6

Review Visa Application Materials with OGS

Typical Timeframe: 0-1 Day

  • Prior to visiting the consulate to apply for the visa, the faculty member returns to OGS to have visa application materials reviewed.

STEP 7

Attend Consulate Appointment

Typical Timeframe: 1 Day

  • Faculty member attends consulate appointment to submit visa application.

STEP 8

Pick up Visa and Passport

Typical Timeframe: 14-30 Days

  • Faculty member returns to consulate to pick up visa and passport.

STEP 9

Travel to Destination

Typical Timeframe: N/A

  • Faculty member travels to destination and enters showing their passport and visa.

STEP 10

Apply for Temporary Residence Permit

Typical Timeframe: 30-60 Days

  • Once in Argentina, the faculty member registers their address with the local police office. The faculty member should also obtain an address certificate from the police in-person which will be required for the DNI. 
  • Faculty member submits an application for a residence permit as soon as possible after they receive their work permit. Applications for residence permits are made at the Argentina Immigration Service (GIS).

STEP 11

Apply for National Identity Document (DNI) Complete the Registration Process

Typical Timeframe: 1-5 Days

  • Faculty member Books an appointment with the immigration office to obtain a DNI.
  • At the same appointment, the faculty member registers for a CUIL ID (tax ID card).  The CUIL ID is required in order to legally work in Argentina.
  • The Immigration Office typically approves the application and grants the DNI after approximately 30 days.
  • Faculty member registers with the National Identity Authority. During the registration process, the faculty member completes a registration form, provides biometric information and fingerprinting, and has their photograph taken.
  • Once the registration is completed, the faculty member immediately receives a non-citizen registration card valid for 12 months. The registration is renewable.
