RE: Fall 2014 NYU Accra Update

DATE: August 7, 2014

Dear NYU Accra Advisory Committee Members,

As you know, we have been closely following events in West Africa and their potential impact on NYU Accra. Today, we are writing to inform you that, after careful and full consideration, we have made the difficult decision to postpone coursework at the site for this fall, with the hope that we will be able to resume classes in January 2015.

We understand that, at present, the possibility of any of our students contracting the Ebola Virus in Ghana remains very low. However, after extensive consultations with colleagues in Accra and New York, medical professionals in the U.S. and abroad (including those familiar with the situation on the ground in Ghana), and the university's emergency evacuation partner with whom we have worked around the globe, we are not confident that we can provide the kind of experience students have come to expect at NYU Accra. In addition, we are not certain that, should the need arise, we can easily remove our students from the region.

Without that level of confidence, we believe that we cannot risk sending our students into an environment in which future conditions are so uncertain, and in which they would encounter significant regional travel restrictions, and potential limitations with regard to internships and community service.

Several students have already withdrawn, but we are working with the remaining enrolled students -- including two visiting students from Spelman College and Trinity College -- to identify other sites within the global network where they will pursue their studies. We are now assisting them with securing visas and housing as well as providing other logistical and financial support to make this transition as smooth as possible.

We very much appreciate your partnership and support during this time. Please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or if you would like to speak further about NYU Accra.
