New and Incoming Residents
Welcome to NYU Faculty Housing. Your move-in process will be primarily managed by NYU's property manager, Cushman & Wakefield. Please refer to the information below to guide you through your move.
Move-in Date and Lease Signing
Please first communicate your desired move-in and lease start date to the Office of Faculty Housing. This information will then be forwarded to Cushman & Wakefield on your behalf.
Your new lease will be sent via email from DocuSign a few days before the start of your lease to sign electronically.
Check amounts for the first month's rent and security deposit (separate checks are needed) will be noted in the opening letter of the DocuSign new lease to fill out electronically. Please make your rent check and security deposit separate checks payable to New York University.

Neighbor is an online community that connects people who need a place to store their belongings with unused storage spaces near them. This allows users to find cheaper, more flexible, and more convenient storage options. You can check the listings in New York here.
Neighbor is not affiliated with NYU. NYU does not provide storage and NYU is not responsible for any abandoned, lost, stolen or damaged items.
First Month's Rent and Security Deposit
Check amounts for the first month's rent and security deposit (separate checks are needed) will be noted in the opening letter of the DocuSign new lease to fill out electronically.
Upon signing your lease, you will be required to provide two (2) separate payments:
- The first month's rent;
- The security deposit (equal to one month’s rent)
Both payments must be made payable to New York University. For your convenience, Cushman & Wakefield accepts personal checks, money orders, and certified bank checks (they do not accept credit cards or cash payments).
A completed IRS Form W-9 is also required so we can keep your security deposit in a trust account while you are a resident. It is strongly recommended that you type into the form as illegible handwriting will lead to complications with your deposit.
Pet Friendly Buildings
NYU allows pets in its residential buildings. As per the NYU Faculty Housing lease Section 26.a, tenants are permitted 1-dog or 2-house cats. Tenants are not to exceed this allocation.
A pet deposit of $500 is required at lease signing and may be returned to you upon move out if no pet damage has occurred. Please review your lease for the full terms and conditions of pet ownership.
Children's Playground ("Key Park")
The Washington Square Village Playground ("Key Park") is open to residents of NYU rental housing and community members in the Washington Square neighborhood. The playground key application must be submitted to Cushman & Wakefield at lease signing. The Playground is for children aged 2 to 12 and proof of age is required. A $15 fee is also assessed per key.
Renters Insurance
As of July 1, 2016 all new NYU leases and renewing leases will require tenants to provide proof of Renters Insurance within thirty (30) days of the commencement of the new lease term. This measure will protect your personal property in the event it is damaged or destroyed as well as provide liability coverage in the event of an injury or loss to a third party while in your apartment.
NYU's group insurance program allows you to receive quotes from three of the nation's most respected insurance carriers. As an employee of NYU, you are automatically eligible to apply for policies with special discounts. To arrange for insurance, please visit or call the company below or a provider of your choosing.

When calling you may be asked a series of questions the amount of property coverage desired, amount of liability coverage needed and what, if any, high end possessions you may want listed under your policy. Conducting a personal inventory is a key part of obtaining the appropriate amount of coverage. A good source for a guide to a personal inventory is the “Conducting a Personal Inventory” page on the Traveler’s website. See: https://www.travelers.com/personal-insurance/renters-insurance/personal-property-inventory.aspx. Additionally, you may be asked questions about the building in which you live:
• Construction of the building (frame, brick, fire resistive, etc)
• Number of units in the building/Number of units between firewalls
• Types of pets, if applicable
• Safety devices in the residence (smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, sprinkler system, doorman/security guard)
If you require assistance answering and of these facility related questions, please contact the Client Services Center at 212.998.1001 and your call will be addressed by our Facilities Management team.
