Eligibility
Q: Do I have to belong to an underrepresented minority to apply for this fellowship?
A: The Program is open to all persons who meet the eligibility criteria without regard to race, gender, or ethnicity.
Q: Can I still be considered if I do not have U.S. citizenship or permanent residency?
A: Successful applicants must present documents demonstrating that they are legally authorized to work in the United States. The Program does not sponsor visa or work authorization.
Q: I currently hold F-1 immigration status. Am I eligible for the program?
A: NYU cannot support the 24-month OPT extension since NYU is not an e-verify employer.
Q: Can I apply if I have a J.D., M.D., MFA or Ed.D. instead of a Ph.D.?
A: Yes, applicants with terminal degrees in their field may apply as long as they are preparing for a career in university teaching and research.
Q: Can I apply to this program if I am currently an assistant professor?
A: The fellowship is designed to give recent graduates an opportunity to become more competitive candidates for tenure-track appointments. It is not a fellowship program for individuals already on tenure-track.
Q: I received my Ph.D. over five years ago. Am I still eligible for to apply for this fellowship?
A: Yes. You are still eligible to apply if you are transitioning for a career in academia.
Q: I will finish my doctorate next year. Am I still eligible to apply this fall?
A: You should expect to complete your doctorate on or before September 1 of the year following your application. You will have to present evidence that you have completed all the requirements for the Ph.D. when the fellowship begins.
Application
Q: What is the application deadline?
A: The deadline for the AY2022 class of Postdoctoral Fellows is to be determined.
Q: When are the final decisions announced?
A: Final decisions are announced on or about February 15.
Q: What should I include in my statement of research and goals?
A: The research you describe in your statement should be the research you intend to conduct if you were to become a fellow. Your goals should include what you would like to accomplish if you were a fellow and how it fits into your long-term career goals.
Q: What is the length of research and personal statement?
A: Typically the personal statements are around two pages and the research proposal is around five pages.
Q: Is it acceptable to submit additional materials?
A: No. We do not have the resources to consider materials other than those requested.
Q: What does the selection committee focus on when reviewing applications?
A: Faculty reviewers evaluate applicants in all fields according to their potential for success in an academic career with special consideration given to previous publications, strength of research statement, and ability to produce tangible research while at NYU.
Fellows
Q: How do I access my research funds?
A: Fellows should contact the department manager for instructions on how to access research funds. All research fund accounts are distributed in accordance with University and department policies.
Q: What can I use my research funds for?
A: Research funds may be used to purchase books, supplies, and any other materials needed for scholarly work. Research funds also may be used for conferences and research-related travel.
Q: How do I request relocation reimbursement?
A: Fellows should submit a request for relocation reimbursement to the department contact listed in the award letter.
Q: Can I change or revise my research proposal after meeting with my mentor?
A: Yes. Under the consultation of the faculty mentor, the fellow may revise the research proposal.
Q: Is my host department required to provide me with a private office?
A: The program asks host departments to make every effort to find appropriate office space for you during your fellowship appointment. Given the limited office space, fellows may be asked to share office space with other postdoctoral scholars.
Q: What does the in-residence requirement mean?
A: The fellowship requires that you live within the New York City metropolitan area and fellows are expected to have a presence at the NYU campus. A goal of the program is to build a community in which the fellows are available to participate.
Q: What other resources are available to support me in my fellowship?
A: The fellowship gives you access to all of the resources available in the department where you are placed. You will also be connected to the Office of the Provost through frequent luncheons, and you will have the support of the network of previous fellows.
Q: May fellows choose their own housing? Is there housing suggested/provided by NYU?
A: The Program does not provide housing for the fellows. We provide an allowance and, if requested, we can provide some guidance in navigating the New York City real estate market.
