Research Interests / Professional Overview:


Dr. James Apltauer graduated from Case Western Reserve School of Dentistry in 1973. Immediately after graduation, he worked for the Metropolitan Health Planning Corporation in Cleveland, Ohio, helping to plan health-care facilities for a five-county region. Beginning in 1974, Dr. Apltauer served three years as head of a dental clinic run by a non-profit organization. From 1977 to 1982, Dr. Apltauer ran a private practice in Cleveland, Ohio. He also served part-time as an instructor of prosthodontics for Case Western Reserve School of Dentistry from 1981 to 1982. Starting in 1982, Dr. Apltauer again served as primary dentist in a clinic run by a non-profit organization, leaving this service in 2003 to begin working as a Clinical Assistant Professor in NYU College of Dentistry's Department of General Dentistry and Management Science, where he continues today. In addition to his work at NYU, Dr. Apltauer is active in community service.

Research Interests:

Preventing oral complications of cancer therapy; prevention of caries; biofilms and their relationships to dental diseases; bonding and adhesion of dental materials; remineralization and repair of caries.
