My current research interests can be divided into 3 major areas: endochondral bone formation, tissue engineering, and orthodontics. My first area of interest is to elucidate the function of NO and cGMP pathways in endochondral bone formation and growth. Taking advantage of embryonic manipulation techniques (in ovo), mouse tibia organ cultures, and cell culture models, we will gain information on how overexpression or downregulation of components of the NO/cGMP pathways affect endochondral bone formation. In collaboration with the University of Porto, Portugal, knowledge acquired from studies of physiology of growth plate cartilate is being used as a platform for a totally new approach to tissue engineering of bone. We have successfully induced endochondral bone formation in vivo from a cartilage template created in vitro. Studies currently underway in my laboratory show that bone generated by this pathway is undistinghishable from the host bone and has the potential to grow. As an orthodontist and has a member of the Consortium for Translational Orthodontic Research, our research effort in this field has focused in developing new treatment modalities to improve bone quality in the jaws and accelerate tooth movement.
