Group of people at Veterans Appreciation Event

General Information

As a veteran, you will be eligible for a host of benefits while attending New York University. You can apply for VA benefits online.

Since interpretation of regulations governing veterans' benefits is subject to change, veterans should refer regularly to the VA website.

Benefits are available for the following chapters:

  • Post 9/11 GI Bill® (Chapter 33 Yellow Ribbon)
  • Dependents' Educational Assistance (Chapter 35): In the case of Chapter 35 assistance, the Registrar's Office will need the Social Security number of the veteran. You can call our office at 212 998-4280 to provide us with the SSN and/or the Registrar’s Office will contact you.
  • Montgomery GI Bill (Chapter 30)
  • Montgomery GI Bill Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR) 1606
  • Veteran Readiness & Employment (Chapter 31)

As of March 1, 2013 New York University is a participant of the Department of Defense (DOD) Voluntary Education Partnership Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

Most VA Certifying Officials (SCO) at NYU are in the Office of the Registrar.  The School of Medicine and the Graduate Division of the Stern School of Business have their own Certifying Officials. Please contact the schools directly.

Please note:

  • In order for a service member to be entitled to their benefits they must be honorably discharged. Request a free copy of your DD Form 214 (Report of Separation).
  • Transfer students must complete the VA Form 22-1995.

Yellow Ribbon Program

The Yellow Ribbon Program provides supplemental funding to eligible undergraduate and graduate students at New York University who qualify for Post 9/11 GI Bill tuition benefits.

How to Use Your VA Benefits

Step 1: Apply With VA

After you’ve been admitted to NYU, complete the paperwork through the VA, a Certificate of Eligibility Letter (COE) will be mailed, indicating the chapter and eligible benefit(s).

  • Chapter 31 veterans: your case manager will issue an e-authorization code to the NYU School Certifying Official, which permits the SCO to certify your enrollment with the VA
  • The VA Form 22-1905 is no longer used; students do not need to retrieve this form as part of their certification request.

Step 2: Register for Classes at NYU

You should plan to meet with your academic advisor to discuss registering for classes. You can then register for your classes through NYU Albert.

Step 3: Inform NYU of Your Benefit Eligibility

Upon receipt of your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) from VA, submit it to the Registrar by completing this form.  If you do not yet have a COE, attach a screenshot of your benefit information from the VA eBenefits website to the form, but you will still be required to send the COE  to the Registrar once you receive it.

After registering for classes each term, complete this form for our Certifying Official so they can certify your enrollment.

Please note:

  • You may need to login to NYU using your NetID/password to complete the form.
  • Be sure to redact your SSN on any attachment(s) and include your N#.

Health and Dental Insurance

You will be automatically enrolled in NYU health insurance once you register at the university.

You have the option to keep your own medical insurance as a student at NYU, however, you must waive the NYU insurance so that you will not be charged for it.

You can also elect to enroll in the Stu-dent Plan offered through the NYU School of Dentistry.

Taking Classes at Multiple Institutions/Schools

VA benefits can apply to courses taken outside of NYU, provided those courses are approved to count toward your NYU degree. NYU is considered your "primary" or Parent school; all other schools are referred to as "secondary" schools.

Supplemental enrollment is when a student is enrolled at a secondary institution. VA will pay for the credits taken at a secondary institution.

Concurrent enrollment  is when a student is enrolled at both the primary school and secondary institutions simultaneously. VA will pay for the combined credit, taking overlapping enrollment dates into account.

In order for your benefits to cover courses taken at a secondary institution, an NYU School Certifying Official must provide a letter to the School Certifying Official at the secondary institution, indicating that the courses will be accepted as transfer credit that apply to your degree requirements.

To request a “VA/Parent Letter” to be sent to the School Certifying Official at the secondary institution, please fill out the form below, then submit it to your academic advisor for completion. Once we receive the form from your academic advisor, we will contact the secondary institution.

Non-Credit and Certificate Programs

School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SPS) offers Non-Credit programs. For certificate advisement please contact SPS.

Veterans are advised to review the VA website to see if the program is approved.

Please note:

  • If the veteran is interested in a program that is not approved, please contact the NYU Certifying Official.
  • Programs that are not approved require the approval from the State Approving Agency which determines the eligibility of certificate programs.

Veterans’ Tuition Award (NY State Residents)

Veteran's Tuition Awards (VTA) are awards for eligible student veterans matriculated in an approved program. The Veteran's Tuition Award offered by the Higher Education Services Corporation of New York State is meant to help with the cost of tuition.

Per the HESC site:

"The combined tuition benefits available to a student cannot exceed the student’s total tuition costs. Tuition payments received by a student under the Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33 veteran benefits) and Yellow Ribbon program are considered duplicative of any VTA and/or TAP award. Students receiving tuition assistance through these programs may, and in most cases will have their State VTA and/or TAP payment reduced or denied due to these other benefits."

This means that:

  • Even if a Veteran's Tuition Award is estimated on a student billing account, the actual amount HESC awards is dependent on whether tuition has already been paid by other awards.
  • A VTA will not be awarded if the tuition costs are already covered by other aid.
  • Students must apply with HESC each year to be considered for this award. More information regarding eligibility and other frequently asked questions is available on the HESC site.

Delayed VA Payment Policy

NYU will not impose any penalty, including the assessment of late fees, the denial of access to classes, libraries, or other institutional facilities, or to require that a covered individual borrow additional funds due to the individual’s inability to meet his or her financial obligations to the institution due to the delayed disbursement funding from the Department of Veterans Affairs under chapter 31 or 33.

NYU does not consider the following scenarios as a delayed payment:

  • If we receive confirmation from the VA that the student is no longer eligible to receive the funds or have exhausted their eligibility (after NYU submits the certification to the VA).
  • If the student is not covered in full with their VA benefits, including Yellow Ribbon. Not all students have enough VA benefits to cover their semester balance in full. (This is covered in page 2 of the Acknowledgement #4).
  • If the student fails to submit the Certificate of Eligibility (COE), and any other required information for certification.

In the scenarios listed above, the student may be subject to finance charges or registration holds if the balance is not paid by the student.

Academic Requirements

All VA Benefit recipients are expected to reach the objective (bachelor’s, master’s, doctorate, or certificate) authorized by the VA with the minimum number of credits required.

The VA may not authorize payments for credits that are in excess of scholastic requirements, that are taken for audit purposes only, or for which non-punitive grades are received.
