International faculty and researchers can enter the United States on a variety of visa types. While the procedures and timeline differs for each, all visa requests originate with the NYU hiring or sponsoring department. Please note NYU's policy on the Appointment of Foreign Nationals. Should you have questions or encounter issues throughout the process, Scholar Services will gladly assist, but may also refer you to your hiring or sponsoring department.

Nonimmigrant Intent

The concept of nonimmigrant intent is integral to most visas in the US. In order to be granted a nonimmigrant visa (NYU classifications: B-1, E-3, J-1, O-1, and TN), a foreign national must overcome the presumption of immigrant intent by providing documentary evidence of financial and family ties to their home country. Failure to demonstrate nonimmigrant intent when applying for a nonimmigrant visa may result in a visa denial. Further, filing for an immigrant visa (an integral part of the permanent residency process) is inconsistent with maintenance of nonimmigrant status.

Passport Validity

Generally speaking, passports must be valid for six months beyond the date of anticipated exit from the United States, unless you are a citizen of one of the countries who may waive this requirement.
