Status expiring soon? Plan to extend your stay in the US?

Although OGS Scholar Services monitors extensions, you should keep track of your status and take note of when your status will end.

Extensions should be requested before your current document expires. Below are guidelines for the timing of extension requests, but please consult your department liaison or a Scholar Services advisor as soon as you know you will need to extend your status. All extension requests must be submitted to Scholar Services by your academic department.

J-1

Extension should be requested 1 month before the end date listed on your DS-2019. Learn more about extending your J-1 visa.

H-1B

Extensions can be submitted to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services as early as 6 months in advance of the extension start date. If an extension is filed before the end date of your current petition, you may continue to work for 240 days while the case is pending.

O-1

Extensions can be submitted to the US Citizenship and Immigration Services as early as 1 year in advance of the extension start date. If an extension is filed before the end date of your current petition, you may continue to work for 240 days while the case is pending.

E-3

Extension requests should be made at least 6 months prior to the expiration date. There is no automatic extension of employment authorization for 240 days. If your E-3 status expires while the US Citizenship and Immigration Services petition is still pending, you must stop work until the extension has been approved.
