NYU Shanghai

NYU Shanghai Admissions Policy

In response to concerns sent to us by colleagues about the role of the GaoKao in admission of Chinese nationals, and the concern that there might be a “back door” into NYUSH -- a back door that doesn't require the GaoKao -- for the children of wealthy Chinese families, we have ascertained the following:

All applicants to any of the portal campuses, including NYU Shanghai, must complete the Common App, provide references, etc. The GaoKao examination features in that process in the following way:

  • Applicants to NYU Shanghai who are from mainland China are required to take the GaoKao and score in the "top tier."
  • Applicants to NYU Shanghai who are not from mainland China are not required to take the GaoKao.
  • Applicants to NYU New York and to NYU Abu Dhabi (whether or not they are from mainland China) are not required to take the GaoKao.

These rules apply to children of wealthy and poor families alike.

NYU Shanghai Financial Aid

In response to concerns sent to us by colleagues about where NYU Shanghai financial aid money is coming from, we have learned that the Chinese government Shanghai made a grant enabling all Chinese students to pay net tuition of RMB100,000 per year. However, since even RMB100,000 is unaffordable for many deserving students, NYU is asking potential donors for more scholarships (need-based or merit-based), and this effort has already had some success. Chinese students were given the option of applying for this aid and have received both need-based and merit-based awards.
