LGBTQ+ Network in Pride March

If you identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or an ally, then we invite you to learn more about the NYU LGBTQ+ Alumni Network! Hear from the club’s leadership volunteer, Casey Purcell (TSOA ’07), about how and why alumni should get involved.

“I have been a member of the NYU LBGTQ+ Alumni Network for 15 years and have been on the board going on six years now,” says leadership volunteer Casey Purcell (TSOA ’07) (he/him/his) when asked about his continued involvement and dedication to the alumni network. “I want to be a part of a community that I feel connected to but I can also learn from. This network does that so I keep showing up for it.”

The LGBTQ+ Alumni Network group serves those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or an ally through various events, educational programming, and community service opportunities.

In celebration of Pride Month, Casey Purcell shares more with fellow Violets about who the LBGTQ+ Alumni Network are as a group, how it has evolved since its inception, and how other alumni can get involved.

What are some of the ways the NYU LGBTQ+ Alumni Network has evolved since its inception?

When I first joined the board we were growing quickly and gaining speed. We revamped how our board operates, expanded it, and broadened our events and volunteer opportunities.

We are once again evolving from the challenges presented during the pandemic which also made the need for our network even more apparent.

What are some of the events or initiatives that you’re most proud of?

One of my all-time favorites was “Letters of Love!” For this event we met up and crafted handwritten cards of appreciation to our Armed Forces Veteran NYU students.

What would you like the NYU alumni community to know about the NYU LGBTQ+ Alumni Network?

The Network is inherently by and for its members! That’s the whole point—we make our own community.

If you had to describe the NYU LGBTQ+ Alumni Network in one word, what would it be?

Multifarious.

What do you hope to accomplish within NYU and what impact do you want to have on the wider community?

I hope to have a useful impact on both within the university and the wider community. The two intersecting aspects of our venn diagram, after all, are LGBTQ+ -related and NYU-related.

How can alumni get involved with the NYU LGBTQ+ Alumni Network?

The easiest way is to join our club, which you can do by joining the LBGTQ+ Alumni Network listserv (Communication Preferences>Affinity Clubs> LGBTQ+ Alumni Network).

Updating your communication preferences means you’ll get invitations to LGBTQ+ events where you can mingle and get to know others within the community!
