NYU Alumni Connect April 2016
April 2016
The Pasta Dough that Built NYU's Vanderbilt Hall
There are many reasons for NYU School of Law’s prestigious reputation: The unique Hauser Global Law School Program brings transnational perspectives to the classroom and lecture hall; the school also has a premier faculty; and boasts a roster of illustrious alumni, among them Crystal Eastman, Mohamed ElBaradei, Elihu Root, Fiorello LaGuardia, and Lucille Edwards Chance. And then there’s the noodle factory.
NYU Alumni and Family Day
There’s no place like home! Save the date: You're invited to the Washington Square campus for NYU Alumni and Family Day on Saturday, October 22. Celebrate your NYU memories with former classmates, friends, and fellow alumni. More details will be available soon.
NYU Day at the Yankees
Show your Violet pride and be a part of NYU Day at the Yankees on Saturday, May 7 as the Yankees take on the Boston Red Sox! Discounted tickets are available using the promotional code NYU16.
2016 Honorary Degree Recipients
NYU recently announced the names of those to be honored at the University’s 184th Commencement Exercises: Darren Walker, President of the Ford Foundation, will address the graduates on behalf of all the degree recipients. Mr. Walker will receive a Doctor of Laws degree at the ceremony. Honorary degree recipients also include scientist Emmanuelle Charpentier, actor/director and NYU alumnus Billy Crystal, congressman and civil rights leader John Lewis, and Judge Margaret Marshall.
The Brooklyn Bridge Wins!
The people have spoken! Congratulations to this year's March Madness Champion, the #Brooklyn Bridge! The cables of the iconic bridge, which beat out 15 other alumni innovations and entrepreneurial pursuits, were designed by James Wood, who attended Brooklyn Collegiate and Polytechnic Institute, now NYU Tandon School of Engineering, during the 1870s.
Unleashing Ambition
Calixta Lee (STERN ’16): Your continued support means the world to me. My dad is the sole provider for our family of five and I have two younger siblings who will also be attending college in the future. With your help, I was able to get the comprehensive global business education I had always dreamed of and enjoy everything else that NYU had to offer without the huge financial burden I was expecting. As a result, I was able to become more involved in my community, explore different career paths, and discover what I was most passionate about. I will always remember your generosity. Thank you for everything.
Vibrant: Here are more reasons we're #VioletProud...
If you’re in NYC on May 17, look up! Since 2008, the Empire State Building has been lit in violet on the eve of NYU Commencement, in honor of the University's soon-to-be graduates.
Trivia: On April 22nd, 1937, an estimated 8,000 undergraduates gathered in Washington Square Park to protest. What were they protesting against?
Submit your answer here for a chance to win a limited edition NYU t-shirt!
Congratulations to Tiffani Bell (CAS ’92), winner of last month’s raffle. The Washington Square Arch is made of Tuckahoe Marble.
