Prepare for NYU
The below is a list of what all students should do before class begins to make sure they are ready for their time at NYU.
Required Steps
1. Register for Classes
Space in courses is limited and students are encouraged to register early to get into the courses they wish to take. See the Academics & Advising page for more information.
2. Pay Account Balance
Students are not charged tuition or fees until after they register for class. Once they register, an e-bill will be sent to their NYU email. The payment deadline will be listed in the student account. Information about how to view your student account and methods of payment is online. Please contact the NYU Bursar Office with any questions.
Please note: Students who do not pay their balance by the deadline may be de-enrolled from courses and they will not be able to be added back into classes if they are full. Therefore, students and families are encouraged to pay their account balances by the deadline. In addition, charges may be added to a student’s account at different times, and students and families are encouraged to check their account balance regularly for any new charges. Students who decide not to attend the program must notify the program of withdrawal in order to have charges removed from their account and not remain responsible for payment.
Students who apply for and receive a summer scholarship may have their scholarship amount adjusted based on final enrolled course credits. Adjusting their credit total will impact a student’s account balance. For more information, please e-mail financial.aid@nyu.edu.
3. Get NYU ID Card
All students must get a NYUCard, the student ID on campus. You cannot get your NYUCard until after you register for class. Once you are registered, submit an ID photo online, and you can pick up your ID from the NYU Card Center, 7 Washington Place. In the summer, students living on campus can receive their NYUCard at move-in.
4. Read the NYU High School Programs Handbook
The High School Programs Handbook details the policies and procedures of NYU Precollege, and all students and parents are expected to read it prior to the start of the program. Any questions about program policies may be addressed to NYU Precollege Advising at precollege@nyu.edu.
5. Submit Program Forms
Students will receive an email with information about the required forms for the program. The forms must be completed and signed by a parent or guardian or the student, depending on the student’s age. Forms are submitted online, and information is available online.
6. Submit Immunization Records
New York State law and NYU policy requires students registering in 6 credits or more to submit immunization records for MMR and meningitis.
Immunization forms and information is available on the NYU Student Health Center website. Please contact the Immunization Office with any questions at health.requirements@nyu.edu or 212-443-1199.
Effective May 2023, NYU will no longer require COVID-19 vaccination. However, staying up to date with COVID-19 vaccinations, including booster shots, remains strongly recommended for the health and safety of the student and the campus community—and students are welcome to wear masks anytime they choose. More information about COVID-19 protocols at NYU, including updates, is available on the NYU COVID-19 Information website.
7. Buy Textbooks
Some NYU professors may order books for your class at the NYU Bookstore. You can search for course textbooks online. If no textbooks are listed, do not worry. Not all professors use the Bookstore, and it is common in college not to get the full list of books or readings for a course until the first day of class.
8. Decide What to Bring
Below is a suggested list of items to bring for the program.
- Comfortable shoes
- Reusable water bottle
- Sunscreen and sunglasses in summer
- Umbrella
- Backpack or larger bag for books and personal items
- Extra spending money
- Valid photo ID or passport
- Health insurance card
- Notebooks, pens, and other items you would like to use for class
For students living on campus in summer:
- Cleaning supplies for your room and bathroom
- Alarm clock
- Personal items from home to make your room comfortable
- Linens: students will need to bring sheets, blankets, and pillows for extra-long twin beds and a set of towels. Linens are available for sale online via the NYU Bookstore.
9. Attend Orienation
Mandatory for all students, orientation will cover important information including academic dates and deadlines, program policies and resources and services available to students. Students will receive orientation details via email before the start of the program.
Optional Steps
1. Register with the Moses Center for Student Accessibility
Students with support needs are encouraged to contact the Moses Center early to register with that office and have their needs evaluated. The Moses Center determines appropriate accommodation for students inside and outside the classroom. Accommodations range based on need but can include emotional support animals, assistance in class, alternative exams, and special summer housing.
2. Apply for Housing (Summer)
Summer students interested in living on campus must submit a Housing Licence as a part of their required program forms. This License serves as the housing confirmation. Space in housing is limited and available first-come, first-serve.
3. Apply for a Scholarship (Summer)
Students who indicate an interest in financial aid on their NYU Precollege summer application will receive scholarship application information via email after they submit an application. The deadline to apply for a scholarship is April 1. If you do not receive a scholarship email, please contact university.programs@nyu.edu or 212-998-2292.
Please note: On the scholarship application, students are asked to list the total number of course credits they plan to take during the program. If you receive a scholarship, the funds you receive are based on your anticipated tuition cost. Therefore, you should register in the number of credits you indicated in your scholarship application. If you later add or drop a course and your total credits change, your scholarship amount may be adjusted up or down accordingly. For questions about matching your scholarship amount to your credit total, please contact NYU Financial Aid at financial.aid@nyu.edu or 212-998-4444.
4. Register for a Meal Plan (Summer)
Summer students living on campus will be automatically enrolled in the 10-meal per week meal plan. Residential students may register in a bigger meal plan at an increased cost, and commuter students may register in a meal plan if they desire. Information about campus dining is available online.
