So you’ve decided to go to graduate school. You’ve looked up a couple of programs, laid out the pros and cons, and have ranked them in order . You’re almost ready to start your applications, but you want to be sure before you take that next step. What to do, what to do...go on a campus tour! Campus tours can be a vital part of your decision-making process.
Here are 5 reasons to go on a campus tour:
1. You can get a feel of the campus
Are you the type of person who likes big sprawling schools surrounded by trees and greenery? Or do you prefer walking past skyscrapers and hot dog stands in a more urban environment? Either way, touring a campus can help you figure out if it’s going to be a fit for you. Walk around, take in the view--you might actually see something you like.
2. You can speak to students who actually attend the university
Google is a great resource, but only a current student can give you crucial details about campus life like the location of the financial aid office or the best places on campus to take a quick nap between classes (8th floor of the library). Your tour guides are current students who are plugged into the university, so you can trust them to give you a good, honest idea of what it’s like to be a student at the school.
3. You can meet other prospective students
Applying to graduate school(s) can be a long and difficult process, but you’re not alone, especially when you’re on a campus tour. It’s an easy way to meet other future grad students. Who knows--you might even meet someone applying to the same program and make a friend.
4. You’ll get to see how your tuition is spent
When you’re on a campus tour, you get to see firsthand what your tuition would be going to. Check out the campus resources like the library, the gym, and the health center to see what’s available to students at the university.
5. You can explore the city
The fun doesn’t have to end just because the tour is over. Once you’ve seen the campus, why not spend some time exploring the rest of the city? Hop on the nearest train (or call an Uber if you’re not ready for that MTA life just yet) and see the sights that NYC has to offer.
School may be out for the semester, but GMAC will still be offering campus tours throughout the summer. Visit our homepage and register for a tour today!
