Securing Federal Loans

1. Accept your desired loan(s) on NYU Albert via the Accept/Decline Financial Aid link and follow the instructions given.

Students who are borrowing Subsidized and/or Unsubsidized for the first time as an NYU student should:

1. Log on to your student account at studentaid.gov using your own student FSA ID.
2. Sign the Subsidized/Unsubsidized Master Promissory Note by clicking “Complete Loan Agreement (Master Promissory Note)” and choosing the option “MPN for Subsidized/Unsubsidized Loan.”
3. Complete the online Undergraduate or Graduate Entrance Counseling.

Important notes:

• Students who have borrowed Subsidized and/or Unsubsidized Loans as an NYU student in previous years do not need to complete a new promissory note if their previous MPN is still active and will not have to complete a new Entrance Counseling session.

Students who are borrowing Graduate PLUS Loans for the first time as an NYU student should:

1. Log on to your student account at studentaid.gov using your own student FSA ID.
2. Sign the Graduate PLUS Master Promissory Note by clicking “Complete Loan Agreement for a PLUS Loan (Master Promissory Note)” and choosing the option “PLUS MPN for Graduate/Professional Students.”
3. Complete the online Graduate Entrance Counseling.

Important Notes:

• Students who have borrowed Graduate PLUS Loans as an NYU student in previous years do not need to complete a new promissory note if their previous MPN is still active and will not have to complete a new Entrance Counseling session.

1. The student should accept the desired loan(s) on NYU Albert (Accept/Decline Financial Aid link) and assign each loan to a parent borrower by providing the parent borrower’s email address. Note: The email must belong to the parent, not the student. You, the parent, will immediately receive an email providing further instructions. If you do not receive the email, please check your spam folder.
2. Create a parent FSA ID if one does not already exist.
3. Sign in to studentaid.gov using your parent FSA ID.
4. Under the LOANS AND GRANTS heading, navigate to the “Get a Loan” menu and select “PLUS Loans: Grad PLUS and Parent PLUS.”
5. Click the LEARN MORE button to the right of the “I am a Parent of a Student” section.
6. Click the START button and follow the steps to complete the application and credit check.
7. Then complete a Parent PLUS Master Promissory Note by clicking the “Master Promissory Note (MPN)” link under LOANS AND GRANTS and then choosing the option “I’m a Parent of an Undergraduate Student.”

If your credit is approved:

1. You will receive a confirmation email within approximately five business days of completing the PLUS Loan Request and PLUS Master Promissory Note (subject line “NYU PLUS Loan Confirmation Instructions”). Please check your spam folder if you do not receive the email. 
2. Complete the PLUS Confirmation by clicking the link in the email and following the instructions.

If your credit is denied, please see Federal Loan Credit Denial.

1. The student should accept the desired loan(s) on NYU Albert (Accept/Decline Financial Aid link) and assign each loan to a parent borrower by selecting the existing borrower from the drop down box. This acceptance will allow studentaid.gov to review the parent borrower's credit history.
2. As an existing borrower, a PLUS Loan Request is automatically generated with studentaid.gov for a credit decision.

If your credit is approved: 

1. You will receive a confirmation email within approximately five business days of our receipt of the credit approval and MPN (subject line “NYU PLUS Loan Confirmation Instructions”). Please check your spam folder if you do not receive the email. 
2. Complete the PLUS Confirmation by clicking the link in the email and following the instructions.
