There are many opportunities to find additional funding for study abroad, but it requires advance planning and some work.  Some general types:

  • In most cases, you do NOT need to have been accepted into your study abroad program at the time of scholarship application so do not wait!
  • Check the eligibility guidelines for each scholarship before you begin applying.
  • Check the on-line application deadline date. The deadlines vary widely.  And again, they usually do not align with NYU Study Away deadlines.
  • Some scholarships have only one application deadline for the entire academic year.
  • If your application requires a letter of recommendation or certification from your study away adviser, give him or her plenty of lead time.
  • Don't limit yourself to just study abroad scholarships. Reconsider some of the scholarships you may have overlooked or didn't get when first applying to NYU.

External Scholarships

Scholarships for study abroad are available through many organizations. The following are some suggested scholarship opportunities we encourage students attending NYU Study Away consider.

In addition to the scholarships listed, we highly recommend you do additional research for additional opportunities. The following links are a good place to start, but there are many online resources available.

Crowd Funding

More students are looking into personal fundraising. Personal fundraising can take the form of: requesting people or organizations to sponsor you, organizing fundraising parties, or launching online fundraising campaigns. Fundraising helps cover the cost of study abroad and gets your friends and family involved in your study abroad plans. Some possible crowd funding online tools you might want to consider.
