Deadline: September 12, 2018
Senior at time of application (or within four years of your bachelor's degree)
|Duration||Three years of funding toward graduate education at Stanford|
"The Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program is designed to build a multidisciplinary community of Stanford graduate students dedicated to finding creative solutions to the world's greatest challenges."
We’ve had a chance to look through the application, and we can see that it quite different from a number of other fellowship applications, mainly in the breadth of the questions. There is not one personal statement, but two essays that have specific prompts. (“Essay 1: Connect the dots. How have influences in your life shaped you? Essay 2: Describe three different paths for your career and life. To prepare for them, what do you need to learn at Stanford as a Knight-Hennessy Scholar?”) There are other unusual sections: “Please tell us eight improbable facts about you.” All told, the application represents a serious investment of time and energy.
In the recommendation letters section, you’ll see that if you are currently enrolled or very recently graduated, you can request that one of your letters of recommendation for the Knight Hennessy be an institutional letter of endorsement. This is basically a letter written by our office. This institutional endorsement is optional, and would take the place of one letter of recommendation. As the letter explicitly calls for someone who knows you well, unless you’ve had extensive dealings with our office we will assume you will prefer to have another person write that letter of recommendation.
Those of you who would like advisement or a letter of endorsement from the Office of Global Awards must let us know you want this by May 18. While a completed application is not necessary by this deadline, you are expected to know the program of study you plan to apply for at Stanford and to have begun your Knight Hennessy application. Please let us know of your interest by May 18 by emailing us at firstname.lastname@example.org with the tagline “Knight Hennessy.”
