Dual
Dual Degrees—programs that confer two degrees in a shortened time through either a credit sharing arrangement or purposefully blended curriculum—are subject to NYSED oversight. Most Dual Degree programs no longer require independent NYSED registration. Please follow the steps below to determine what approvals your dual degree might need.
Dual Degree Review & Approval Process
Step 1. NYU School Submits Completed Proposal to OAPRA
This step is required for all dual degree programs. Each submitting school will provide OAPRA:
- Curriculum Outline for Each Individual Degree Program (If Applicable)
- Proposed Curriculum Outline for the Dual-Degree Program
- New Integrated Assessment Plan for the Dual Degree, or the Existing Assessment Plans for Each Program Associated with the Dual Degree
- Non-NYS Authorization Form
- Letter from School(s) Dean’s Office(s) Approving Degree Arrangement
Step 2. OAPRA Reviews to Determine if NYSED Registration is Required
When NYSED Registration is not Required
NYSED registration is not required for a dual degree program created from two existing NYU programs when the curriculum design requires the completion of all registered program requirements for each standalone program.

Or...
When NYSED Registration is Required
Scenario 1: Creation of a Single Program that Will Confer Multiple Degrees
Two degree types awarded for a single, purposefully designed, program that will confer multiple degree awards.
How to Proceed
You will need to follow the process to add a new program appropriate to the higher level degree in the dual program. Any dual degree conferred for a program in a licensed profession or teacher certification must follow the new program process for those degree types. Please visit the Add or Change a Program section of this site, and follow the site to the appropriate instructions for this degree.
Scenario 2: Creation of a Dual Degree Program with Modification of at Least One Existing Program
Dual degree programs created from two existing NYU programs with a curriculum design that will result in the modification, removal, or replacement of registered completion requirements for either individual program.
How to Proceed
You will need to follow the process to change a program for the conferred degree in the dual program that will require curricular modifications. Please visit the Add or Change a Program section of this site, and follow the site to the appropriate instructions for this degree.
Scenario 3: Creation of a Dual Degree Program with a Licensed Profession
Dual degree programs that include at least one program that leads to professional licensure require NYSED registration. If you are unsure whether a program leads to professional licensure, please refer to the NYSED list of professional programs.
How to Proceed
You will need to follow the process to change a program for the conferred degree in the dual program that will require curricular modifications. Please visit the Add or Change a Program section of this site, and follow the site to the appropriate instructions for this degree.
