The lights of the Empire State Building will glow violet tonight, May 16, to salute NYU’s graduating class. Beginning at dusk and through 2 a.m., graduates near and far will be able to view the lights of the tower through the Empire State Building webcam.

The violet lights come a day before NYU’s 190th All-University Commencement Exercises, which will be held Wednesday, May 17, in Yankee Stadium.

This year’s commencement speaker will be Sanna Marin, prime minister of Finland, who will receive a Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa, at the ceremony. Marin, the youngest person, at the time of her appointment as Finland’s prime minister, ever to serve as a head of any government, will address the graduates and guests on behalf of all the honorary degree recipients, who also include Nobel-winning chemist Carolyn Bertozzi, ABT Principal Dancer Misty Copeland, and science education innovator Freeman A. Hrabowski, president emeritus of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
