NYU Flag on a Building

"Today we mark a somber anniversary—a year since the murder of George Floyd in a Minneapolis street at the hands of a police officer.

"Since that time, we have seen some measure of justice, as the police officer who knelt on Mr. Floyd’s neck and caused his death was held accountable for his actions. But the more far-reaching and more lasting changes we hope for—changes to policing; an end to unequal treatment of communities of color in the justice system; and a halt to the senseless, unwarranted, tragic killings of people of color at the hands of law enforcement—still seem discouragingly far off despite the what we all witnessed a year ago in that searing incident.

"In the coming year between now and next May 25 and in all the years that follow, let us honor the memory of George Floyd by recommitting ourselves to goals of social justice, human dignity, inclusion, empathy, and to taking action with and for those who continue to bear the brunt of ongoing injustices."
