As part of a global effort to promote higher education research centered around the challenge of climate change, New York University has joined a consortium of universities around the world to launch the International Universities Climate Alliance.

Inaugural members comprise 40 of the world’s leading climate research universities, led by UNSW Sydney and including Caltech, Cornell, and Penn State in the US, as well as institutions in Canada, China, France, Finland, Germany, Ghana, Hong Kong, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and elsewhere. NYU will work in concert with this group to identify the most effective ways to communicate research-based facts related to climate change to the public.

“New York University is proud to be a founding member of the Climate Alliance, since it is only through coordinated global action that we can ever hope to tackle this enormous challenge,” said Andrew Hamilton, President of New York University. “As a large, global research university—with academic centers on six continents—NYU stands ready to contribute our unique expertise and perspective to this important collaboration, and to work together to develop innovative solutions to climate change."

The Climate Alliance benefits from a multi-disciplinary focus around the most important research themes to enable greater engagement with policymakers, educators and business leaders looking to apply the latest research findings to accelerate climate action. Alliance members are committed to work together to identify the best methods to communicate evidence-based research related to climate change to the general public. Members will engage in work across climate change science, impact, mitigation strategies, and adaptation.

Engagement in the Climate Alliance is the latest effort by NYU and its Office of Sustainability to promote sustainable practices both within the University and in the world at large.  In addition to supporting sustainability teaching and learning across diverse schools, championing innovative and entrepreneurial ideas through its Green Grants program, and engaging the community through peer-to-peer education and green event planning, NYU has publicly committed to cutting carbon emissions 50% from its baseline by 2025, and achieving carbon neutrality by 2040.

”With the world currently grappling with a global pandemic, it’s admittedly a challenging time to launch a new effort,” said Cecil Scheib, Chief Sustainability Officer and NYU’s key representative in the Climate Alliance. “However, we collectively decided this initiative was simply too important to delay, and that the issue of climate change could stand to benefit from the current spirit of global responsiveness demonstrated amid the COVID-19 crisis.”
