NYU’s La Maison Française will host François Noudelmann, in conversation with writers Abdellah Taïa (April 1) and Ananda Devi (April 22), a lecture by Catherine Turocy, with dance demonstrations by members of New York Baroque Dance Company (April 2), and the Black Experience in French Cinema Film Festival and Conference (April 11-13, presented by the Institute of French Studies), among other events.
All events are held at La Maison Française, 16 Washington Mews (between University Place and Fifth Avenue), and are free and open to the public and in English, unless otherwise noted. The Black Experience in French Cinema
Film Festival and Conference
Curated by award-winning filmmaker and screenwriter Isabelle Boni-Claverie (currently teaching at NYU's Institute of French Studies), this three-day film retrospective and conference explores changing representations of blackness in French cinema through a cross-disciplinary approach. Themes include the legacy of colonial representations of black French people, race and gender in housing projects, new intimacies across racial lines, and African American experiences in France.
Film screenings are free of charge and open to the public. Seating is first-come, first-served.
