Statement by William Berkley, Chair of NYU's Board of Trustees, Rescinding Bill Cosby's Honorary Degree

NYU's Board of Trustees is rescinding the honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree that the University awarded to Bill Cosby in 1997

"NYU's Board of Trustees is rescinding the honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree that the University awarded to Bill Cosby in 1997.

"We select honorees through a careful, thoughtful process that takes account of their talents, achievements, and contributions to society.  In reviewing the withdrawal of Mr. Cosby's degree, the Board also carefully considered the matter.  His criminal, reprehensible conduct towards his women victims leads to the inescapable conclusion that he is unworthy of a degree that is bestowed honoris causa -- for the sake of honor.  Therefore, the Board has elected to revoke Mr. Cosby's degree -- the first time the University has taken such a step."
