NYU professor James Higham's campaign to check on a famous monkey research site inspired a viral humanitarian relief effort.

After Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico, assistant professor of biological anthropology James Higham sent a colleague in a helicopter to capture devastation at the "monkey island" of Cayo Santiago, an important research site for primatologists worldwide. The researcher, Angelina Ruiz-Lambides, also captured an S.O.S. message painted in the street in the neighboring community. When @NYUprimatology tweeted out the image, it went viral, leading the governor of Puerto Rico to bring aid to the small coastal town.
